The sequel
I was astounded by the responses
to the article “Flag Defamation.” Mr.
Bosselman and Mr. Gregorius do not
seem to understand that the flag is
much more than simply “little more
than colored fabric”; it is the symbol
of the United States and the virtues
for which the country stands: justice,
freedom, and peace. Defaming the
flag cheapens those very rights, as
well as the right to free speech. This
may not be a perfect nation (what in
this world is?), but its citizens have
tried to correct injustices committed
in the past. It is ridiculous to
condemn the whole nation for events
in its past that are over and done
with, or in the present that are being
faced. Not everyone must agree on
everything, but the people should
respect the symbols of the freedom
that allows us to disagree.
As the daughter and sister of
members of the military, I am highly
offended that Mr. Bossclman and
Mr. Gregorius expect to have the
right to defame this nation’s symbols
without thinking of the price paid so
that they can have that right. It is an
insult to every veteran who ever
lived or died in defense of our
freedoms that these two and others
like them can so defame the symbol

Tasteless ioon
I found the cartoon of Bishop
Bruskewitz (April 16) to be very
offensive to my faith as well as in
extremely poor taste on the part of
the Daily Nebraskan.
The message you were trying to
convey was that the Bishop was
attempting to kick even Christ out of
the Catholic Church. Had you
researched this controversy sur
rounding the Bishop and the stand he
had chosen to take, you would
realize your cartoon was way out of
line. As was pointed out by John
Hogg’s letter, the Bishop was merely
trying to bring people closer to Jesus
by making them review their faith on
a deeper level and really evaluate
their life’s priorities. Your cartoon’s
message was not even close to
shedding light on the real issue. In
fact, if anything, you have only
accomplished the pointless task of
confusing people further about this
issue.

America? Wednesday, it was how
driving was so much better in
Finland, and in other columns it has
been Finland this, or Europe that,
and how every other country was
better than the United States in
general.
Am I stretching it? I think not.
Now, I respect Veera’s right to
write her columns, and she can think
what she will (this is America after
all). But she should be aware that
we already know about these things,
and with the exception of a very
small number of Americans (Ted
Kaezynski comes to mind), we like
things the way they are. I for one
would like to believe that Vecra is
enjoying the relative freedom and
benefits that come from living in the
USA (note: benefits does not refer to
the government kickbacks like
unemployment and welfare benefits
that is currently draining the work
ethic of many European countries),
but if she really doesn’t like
America, and the concept of indi-i
vidual responsibility, then she can go
back to Russia, Germany, or
whatever country Finland would now
be a part of if the United States of
America, and it’s laws, heritage, and
people had never existed.
