I Most new releases not worth seeing

for the new-release shelves. Only one
new release is definitely worth rent

“Now and Then”
— Four childhood
friends come to
gether to celebrate
a childbirth and end
up reminiscing
about the younger
days.
The older set
(Melanie uritlith, Demi Moore, Rita
Wilson and Rosie O’Donnell) is much
more recognizable than the kids, which
include Christina Ricci and Thora
Birch.
The film is mildly amusing, but
focuses too much on one time period
over the other.
“Cutthroat Island” — This one
came and went so quick, so it wouldn’t
be surprising if you didn’t remember
it.
During a search for the three parts
of a treasure map, a pirate (Geena
Davis) and her slave (Matthew
Modine) face mutiny, sword fights
and more explosions than you could
possibly believe.
Still, if you hang your brain at the
door, it can be an enjoyable film. Roll
the dice.
“Unstrung Heroes” — Good old
fashioned drama! Back to the basics!
Steven (Nathan Watt) moves in
with his two eccentric uncles after his
mother (Andie MacDowell) falls ter
minally ill and his father (John
Turturro) proves to be too difficult to
live with.
Good, solid acting all the way
around, and director Diane Keaton
brings it all together for an all-around
good flick.
“The Scarlet Letter” — OK, so the
filmmakers took a couple of creative
liberties with the original Hawthorne
novel.
(Like changing the ending, charac
ters, story line, etc.)
Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and
company all should be ashamed for
starring in this slice of cinematic
sludge. Avoid this sucker like laxa
tive-filled brownies.
PICK OF THE WEEK —Richard
Dreyfuss got the shaft at this year’s
Oscars, but a few years back, he picked
up an Academy Award for his work in
“The Goodbye Girl,” co-starring
Marsha Mason.
Based on the Neil Simon play, the
movie portrays Mason as Paula, a
single mom whohasjust been dumped
by another actor boyfriend. She has an
apartment and no job, and Elliot
(Dreyfuss) is an actor with no apart
ment. The two reluctantly join up,
despite her vow to stay away from
actors.
Formula? Yes. Funny? To say the
least.
The fdm has hoots from beginning
to end, the chemistry and dialogue are
excellent, and Dreyfuss’performance
was well worth the Oscar. It’s the
perfect heartwarmer to catch before
dead week begins.
Grab some friends and loved ones,
too. Check it out.

ing The Monkey,” and with his first
major motion picture, “Flirt ing W ith
Disaster,” he shows he is not just a
flash in the pan.
His characters are all human;
that much is obvious. The strong
neurosis of each of the characters,
however, brings in the audience,
reminding them of someone they
have known like that in real life.
Stiller and Arquette are OK as
the parents surrounded by — and
afflicted with — neurolicism, but
the performances range too often
between comedy and drama, and
are too bland at that. Tea Leoni as
the befuddled psychologist also
shows very little flavor in her role.
The real prizes for “Flirt ing With
_
Disaster”^) to the comedy veter
ans. Moore and Segal are the par
ents from Hell that we all hear about,
and Alda and Tomlin are equally
wonderful as the (supposedly) ideal
parents.
The comedy in “Flirting With
Disaster” is a little cerebral, and
requires a sense of humor where
you can laugh at yourself and your
fellow human beings.
