Long before “The X-Filcs” was
even a gleam in a Fox-TV producer’s
---1 eye, Frank Black
was stuffing the
headsofthe world’s
paranoiacs and mu
sic lovers with mu
sic from the band
that set the standard
for college rock in
CanfArl the late 1980s and
vwnycri early 1990s.
K©VI©W That band was
called the Pixies,
and Frank Black (known then as Black
Francis) was its leader. It made its
debut in 1987 with “Come On Pil
grim” and proceeded to blow away
just about everybody who heard them
in the next six years.
But that was the past and now Black
is a solo artist. “The Cult of Ray,” an
exciting collection of 13 songs that go
back to the primal instincts of the rock
‘n’ roll animal, is his latest effort.
Nebraskans will get a chance to
hear Black work his magic live when
he takes the stage Sunday night at
Omaha’s Ranch Bowl.
Whereas Black’s first two solo re
leases — his self-titled debut and
“Teenager of the Year”—were eclcc
tic mixes of hard rock, acoustic folk
and space-age synthesizers, “The Cult
of Ray” is nothing but pure, driven
guitar music.
By spicing this instrumental mix
with a heavy dose of paranoia, nonsen
sical sayings and the heart of a true
believer, Black creates an album that
could best be described as unadulter
ated Frank.
This blend of fast and furious rock
songs and surf-styled instrumentals
creates a feel that hovers somewhere
around the Pixies’ “Bossanova” pe
riod.
And if Black’s live show stays true
to the sound of “The Cult of Ray,”
Sunday’s concert should be an ener
getic and invigorating affair for all
involved.
Tickets for the show are $10.75 in
advance and $11.75 the day of the
show. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the
music starts at 9. One of Black’s
labelmates, Jonny Polonsky, will open
the show.
