New band perks up Lincoln, Legislature By Cliff Hicks Staff Reporter Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St., will have a “Twisted Twang!” tonight as it houses the release party for r—- The Perks’ first U0nC6rt compact disc, Preview 11T w *s 1 e d ncvicw Twangr “We haven’t played recently because we were working hard on the album,” said Judi Lethcby, thc band’s vocalist. The Perks were formed when Judi and her husband Bob, who is the bassist, moved to Lincoln from Norfolk. “We put an ad in the paper and Butch (Berman, the band’s guitar ist and keyboardist) called us up,” she said. “We held auditions for drummers, and we chose Dean (Bridges). “Everything just clicked.” The Perks have played at the Zoo Bar before, as well as the Howard Street Tavern in Omaha, among other places. Lctheby described The Perks’ sound as “rockabilly and blues, though we have a surf song called Bobby Dean’ on the recording.” The Perks also have built up “kind of a fan club at the Legisla ture,” where Lctheby works. “Three of the songs are about people I work with there,” she said. When asked i f she had any songs about problem people at the Legis lature, she replied, “'Slick Little Louie’ is about someone who used to work there. The song tells it all.” “Twisted Twang!” is being re leased on Sty Records, The Perks’ self-run record label. “I’m doing all of the public rela tions myself. It’s a lot of work,” Letheby said. The Perks will play tonight at the Zoo Bar from 5 to 7. There is a $4 cover charge. They also will play at Eldorado Hills in Norfolk on April 6 from 8 p.m. to midnight. _ Be descriptive. I found iheir takes on such clas sics as “Macho Man” and “Fever” to be especially humorous. Their use of essential props is also great. They would be worth seeing even if they just had amusing lyrics and jokes, but there is more. They are really talented. They have beautiful voices, and yes, beau tiful is the word to describe them. If you close your eyes and try to block out the fact that what you are watch ing looks like a bunch of women, you will hear four men belting out some of the best a cappel 1 a you have ever heard. When they are not goof ing around with their music in a skit, they really can make some impres sive and beautiful noise. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours in a scene that was very new to me, although it was somewhat sad to be in a room full of attractive guys with the realization that Brian would probably get a date with one before I would. “Kinsey Sicks” will perform two more shows at “Q” tonight and Sat urday at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $ 10, but seating is limited.
