    $2 million allotted
for work training
Gov. Ben Nelson announced
Monday that $2 million in federal
grants will fund the first statewide
School-to-Work partnership in Ne
braska schools.
Jim Underwood, president of
Northeast Community College,
which received part of the grants,
said during Nelson’s weekly tele
phone conference that Nebraska
schools needed a job-oriented pro
gram to prepare students for the
workplace.
“We’re seeing a work force that’s
under-prepared,” he said.
The program will teach students
career skills, such as problem-solv
ing and team-building, and job
competency, Underwood said.
Jamie Rcnshaw, president of the
Gage County economic develop
ment corporation, said the partner
ship would directly link schools and
industry.
Workers and employers from the
business would come to the schools
to talk about their work and teach
job skills, while students would go
to the workplace to experience the
job environment, Renshaw said.
Industries are free to design their
own partnerships because no sys
tematic model of School-to-Work
partnerships has been mapped out.
Nelson said the partnerships
would put competent, productive
employees in Nebraska businesses
and industries, strengthening
Nebraska’s economic future.
Mike Barracklaw, director of
curriculum for Beatrice schools,
said the partnerships would be suc
cessful ventures because they ben
efit both sides.
“That’s the first time I’ve ever
seen business and industry want to
get into bed with education.”

Space station replica
to touch down at UNL
By Julie Sobczyk
Senior Reporter
Space enthusiasts will get to walk
through astronauts’ bedrooms, see
their showers and watch space experi
ments next month when a replica of a
space station lands in Lincoln.
NASA’s International Space Sta
tion will be stopping at the University
of Ncbraska-Lincoln Mueller Plan
etarium April 25 through May 1 to
give the public a chance to sec up close
what living and working in space is
like.
“It’s a very nice exhibit for us,’’ said
Jack Dunn, coordinator of the Mueller
Planetarium. “The public will be in
terested in seeing what kind of beds
and toilets the astronauts have, what
kind of research they do and how they
store things.”
The exhibit will be a life-sized rep
lica of a space station’s living quar
ters and research facilities, he said, al
though solar panels that are part of a
real station aren’t included.
Two 48-foot trailers will be joined
together in an L shape to house the
exhibit. Dunn said. Space scenes will
be painted on the exteriors, and the
interior will be an exact model of
space station.
Two NASA representatives will
give tours, Dunn said. The public will
be able to walk through the exhibit to
see and touch astronaut showers, toi
lets, storage areas and laboratories.
Various experiments with gravity
also will be conducted.
Because the station is so large,
Dunn said he didn’t know where it
woujd be placed on campus. Site pos
sibilities should be determined soon,
he said.
“The administration is still looking
for a site,” he said. “This is big, and
we have to find a good place to put it,
especially for security reasons.”
The exhibit originated at the
Marshall Space Flight Center in
Huntsville, Ala.The station has toured
several cities so far, and it will be in
Baton Rouge, La., before visiting
UNL and then Casper, Wyo.
NASA chose to visit UNL because
of the university’s interest in the space
program, he said.
“They know we’ve been doing pro
grams about space and that we’ve had
astronauts as speakers,” Dunn said.
“But it’s not like we’re the only place
in the country they visit.”
Although Lincoln isn’t the only
city to display the space station, Dunn
said he was excited about the exhibit
coming to UNL.
“It’s good they chose us, in the
sense that it won’t be in every town,”
he said. “It will be a nice, large dis
play that will get a lot of attention.”
