Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
“Murder Ballads”
Reprise Records
Grade: A
When most people refer to the
language of violence, they arc talk
ing about a physical expression of
emotional frustration — a point at
which clenched fists and unbound
fury take the place of normal dis
course.
When Nick Cave refers to the
language of violence, he probably
is talking about his songs. And
“Murder Ballads'’ is a masterfully
orchestrated and executed attempt
to display this language.
Sparse keyboard and drum
tracks provide the barren landscape
in which Cave dwells with moral
and lyrical abandon. And Cave’s
voice — which j umps from guttural
to ravenous — embodies the mor
bid intensity of each song’s char
acter.
The album begins with “Song of
Joy,” the first-person tale of a man
who wanders the world aimlessly
after his wife and children are
slaughtered by a still-unknown
murderer. Slow and driving, this
song opens the album not with a
bang, but with a deep-embedded
thud that resonates long after the
music has ended.
In “Stagger Lee,” Cave guts the
old blues standard, cramming it
with obscenities and raw images of
brutal sexuality and death. The re
sult is a track that alternately serves
as a vicious narrative and a sharp
tongued parody of the entertain
ment industry’s ultra-violent ten
dencies.
Other highlights include
“O’Malley’s Bar,” a 15-minute epic
about one man’s rampage through
a tavern; “Henry Lee,” a turn on the
classic folk song that features guest
vocals by P.J. Harvey; and “Lovely
Creature,” a brooding but musically
invigorating tune.
To put it mildly, this album
would not make Bob Dole or Tip
per Gore happy. Cave’s lyrical ten
dencies surpass even the hardest of
the hard-core “gangsta” rappers in
both brutal content and poetic qual
ity. Referring to the spilled blood
of a victim as a “steaming scarlet
brook” would call William Blake or
Robert Browning to mind sooner
than Snoop Doggy Dogg.
And it is precisely this lyrical
beauty that makes “Murder Bal
lads” more than a shoot-’em-up or
mere glorification of violent behav
ior. Cave has turned murder into
high art and bloody death into po
etic justice. And if that’s not a feat,
then it’s hard to say what is.

Teeth
Continued from Page 9
White said, “She’s basically sell
ing football mouthpieces for $40.
She’s fooling people. She’s basically
robbing the nation.”
White said he was angry at Dr.
Bukk for grabbing media attention
for inferior teeth, warning that “she
bombed Pearl Harbor, and Midway
is just around the comer.”
Though it may seem strange that
someone could make a living sell
ing fake ugly teeth, Bailey said 600
to 700 dentures were bought at the
Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Billy Bob Teeth are impossible
to spot as fakes, Bailey said, but he
constantly improves them anyway,
with styles ranging from “Hockey
Player,” to “Billy Bob” and “Vam
pire.”
White said, “We are constantly
improving the stain, adding gum ab
scesses. Our teeth are getting better
all the time.”
