Their third single from “A Boy Named Goo,” “Naked,” also has been doing well. The Goo Goo Dolls already have done extensive louring on its own in small clubs, having made two appear ances at Omaha’s Ranch Bowl last year, as well as putting an appearance in on“Latc Night with Conan O’Brien.” No Doubt, the other opening act, is touring in support of its second album, “Tragic Kingdom,” the first single being “I’m Just A Girl.” Before tour ing with Bush, its shared a small club tour with Everclear. Doors for Tuesday’s show open at 6 p.m., and the show will start at 7:30. The show is sold out. Book Review By Patrick Hambrecht Book Critic Do you hate humanity? Do you enjoy watching baby animals and famous cartoon characters suffer? If so, “Underworld — Cruel and Unusual Comics” by Kaz is a barrel full of giggles! Kaz’s work is a favorite of the Manhattan pop art scene, and its easy to understand why. His thick, black-filled cartoons, which depict urban hells and quirky personal depravity, are quintessential of the New York style shared by Eric Drooker, Art Spiegclman and oth ers. This series of four-panel shorts are full of cold, bitter venom and arc as likely to repulse as entertain the casual reader. Along with art ists like Chris Ware and Max Can- ' non, Kaz’s work numbs the human spirit to a new wave of ugly pop nihilism. Alternative comics always have been tracts for outrageous black humor, but what sets “Under ground” apart is its lack of even a defeated humanitarian ideal. While sorrow and angst is rife through Robert Crumb and Dan Clowes’ work for the tortured humanity they portray, “Underground” doesn’t even rise to mock the failings of morality. Instead, both hope or justice arc nonexistent, as Kaz’s flat charac ters mainland dismember each other with a scummy jovial abandon. These cartoons arc not a protest, but a simple statement of evil that anyone with a shred of decency or optimism will deny. Which is not to say “Under world” isn’t funny. These gags arc often hilarious in the traditional Dadaist formula of simple destruc tion over irony. Just like those early icon-destroyers, Kaz creates a fa miliar situation and then desecrates and profanes it to utter meaning lessness. Just by reading his strip, we share his sense of angry glee and acidic contempt for all things real. Either way, it must really suck to live in New York. Music Reviews The West Angeles Church of God in Christ Mass Choir and Con gregation “Saints in Praise — Their Very Best” Sparrow Records Grade: C If the Almighty grades on pol ish, the West Angeles choir is headed straight for the pearly gates — maybe they’ll be shot toward heaven from a rhinestone-studded cannon at the climax of a Las Vegas show. “Saints in Praise — Their Very Best” is a compilation of 10 tracks from “Saints in Praise” volumes one, two and three. This is joy-only gospel. There is no hint of sin or sorrow in the West Angeles choir. They arc Super Prot estants, ultra-smooth and ultra eheerlul. Their voices blend into one voice so huge that 1 was sur prised it lit in my compact-disc player. Thiscnormousquality is the rea son I like this CD better as music than gospel. Alter all, gospel is a music of faith, and a gospel singer is a preacher. 1 didn’t find it terribly convincing to be preached at by what sounded like hundreds of the most exuberant people on the planet. Reverence cn masse is probably not very common, and the choir sounds as if it is singing just for yuks. Fun also seems to be the motiva tion for the soloists, who whoop and lilt like supererooners Boy/ II Men. The “good news” is second ary to their showy interpretations. All their bigger-than-lifencssde tracts from “Back Home Medley,” a medley of live traditional folk hymns. African-American spiritu als arc moving as a rule, but these interpretations make Christianity sound about as consequential as drinking a Diet Coke or using AT&T. And the cheesy instrumentation sounds like the synthesized theme songs for late 198(Ls- television shows, which seems to be a prob lem that plagues the entire Chris tian recording industry. “Saints in Praise-Their Very Best” is sung by those who arc lucky enough to simply be over joyed, and only overjoyed, about faith. It seems more like an adver tising executive’s idea of gospel than the real thing. — Kathleen Peistrup CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-2588 FAX: 472-1761 8 AM-4:30 pm Monday-Friday 34 Nebraska Union 1400 R Street Lincoln.
