A fcs. / ASUN parties begin barrage By Erin Schulte Staff Reporter * < At a debate Wednesday evening in ; the Nebraska Union, OFFICE party _, candidates ac- i AQIIN cused ACTION , MOUII _ party members Campaign Of being part of , a political ma chine. “When will we change the circle of this good ol’ boy network?” asked i I-> Justin Firestone, OFFICE’S can didate for president of the Association of Students of the University of Ne braska. Eric Marintzer, ACTION’S presi lential candidate, said his party was Reusing on what it would do next /ear, not on past student governments. Funding for various student facili ies was discussed in several debate questions. Keeping student fees from rising ibove the rate of inflation is \CTION’s goal when it comes to \mding student facilities such as the Dffice of Campus Recreation and the Nebraska Unions, Marintzer said. But students should be willing to lay more for better services, Firestone ;aid. Several solutions to UNL’s con gested modem pool were brought up ly both parties. Wiring all residence hall rooms so they wouldn’t need modems, Firestone said, would keep modems open for off-campus students and greck house residents. Marintzer said the issue should be dealt with by the Residence Hall As sociation, but that ACTION would help if elected. Different bills on the table in the Nebraska Legislature gained the atten tion of the parties. Firestone said a statewide tax was a better option than the proposed 9 percent increase in tuition for UNL students. The landlord/tenant act also should be watched, he said. Marintzer said those bills were important and also added that a pro posal to make Husker Spirit plates could bring millions of dollars to UNL. ASUN hears revised expansion plans By Michaela Pieler Staff Reporter Once the Nebraska Union has been expanded, students will be able walk to the union from 15th and S streets without getting wet, a university offi cial told ASUN Wednesday night. Daryl Swanson, director of Ne braska Unions, said the arcade along the plaza was “one of the nicest fea tures of the extension.” Swanson and Kim Todd, campus landscape architect, presented three sketches of the expansion to the As sociation of Students of the Univer sity of Nebraska. “We think this design meets the proposals of the majority,” Swanson said. “We’re really happy with what we came up with.” The new plaza fountain will fea ture a pool surrounded by trees and by stones on which students can sit, she said. Final approval is scheduled for March 23. “It’s a final approval,” he said, “but it’s not a final design.” Sen. Jon Scheve said some students had told him they didn’t like the stones around the fountain. “They said they’d rather sit on tables and chairs instead of rocks,” he said. Other students, Scheve said, criti cized having all benches facing the fountain. “They also want to watch people passing by,” Scheve said. He also suggested extending the post office in the union’s basement because “it often gets kind of crowded.” In other business, ASUN approved a 21-cent increase in student fees per semester to fund the Office of Cam pus Recreation’s wellness service. Band Continued from Page 1 where the top marching band of the year is selected, he said. Alyssa Utecht, a freshman educa tion major who marches in the band, said the trophy made her feel good about herself. “It’s pretty cool,” Utecht said. “It’s a good feeling to know that all those hours we put in don’t go unrecog nized.” During football season, band mem bers practice Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m., he said. Practice on football game days lasts from 8 a.m. “until they get it right,” Chesnutt said. Jeremy Bettis, a senior computer science major and a member of the marching band, said the band deserved the trophy. “I think it demonstrates how those of us in the band felt all along — that we are the nation’s top marching band.” And not only is UNL’s marching band the best in the nation, it’s also the oldest. The commitment shown to the band by the university and the state has helped it survive for 118 years, Kloecker said. “The people of this state take a lot of pride in the band,” he said. “It’s a good band state.” In about two weeks, the marching band will show off its award-winning talent to Dublin, Ireland, as it travel? overseas for the annual St. Patrick’s Dav narade. - “It’s a neat opportunity to show off what we have to a whole other part of the world,” Chesnutt said. “It’s great for the kids.” Kloecker said about 400,000 people would be watching the parade in Dublin. “It will be a really fascinating cul tural experience,” he said. Students in the band used money from fund-raisers and from their own pockets to pay for the trip, he said. The cost is about $1,300 per student. The Sudler Trophy will be pre sented at the Nebraska-Colorado State football game this fall. But, Chesnutt said, students aren’t looking to win more awards. “When people tell them they’ve done a good job — that’s as good as my award.”_ sarah jessica parker eric schaeffer elle macpherson IF LUCY FELL A comedy for the romantically challenged nail ini nin him jiskiik jina wiimimi MMilliBliillllitrilSllHliffl »■ DlflETtniBl W—^ ~= JSa™ SH IT SOON AT A TKATRE NEAR YOU SiM* “■ Wim VISIT THE SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT SITE AT http://www.aony.com • \ * * \ S " j V • Lecture Notes, • ^Course Packets v «.Resume Seivipc • Copy 4 Blppeiy \ • Fast Services: ' > Laminating , y y ;Vv-yvyyv'^V' • /. > ..." ’ ' \ ACCURATE • FAST • PROFESSIONAL Receive $2 off a resume package with this ad.
