    ‘Happy’ play hits Wesleyan
By Cherie Krueger
Staff Reporter
A happy end is coming to Nebraska
Wesleyan University.
No, the school is not closing. It is going to
be the site of the musical production, “Happy
End.”
The play, which opens Friday, is set in 1920s
Chicago, and is the story
of gangsters and Salvation
Army workers. One of the
workers becomes infatu
ated with one of the gang
sters, and the play devel
ops into a social commen
tary on how similar the
two groups of people re
ally are.
The musical’s stage di
rector, Anthony Clark
Kaczmarek, said parts of
the story line had been compared to “Guys and
Dolls,” but that it was actually much different.
‘“Happy End’ playfully examines two dif
ferent facets of society ... seemingly at oppo
site ends of the spectrum,” said Clark
Kaczmarek, a Nebraska Wesleyan senior.
“High-spirited, comical characters, melodra
matic plot twists and sharp, biting social com-.
mentary make this musical delightful for audi
ence members.”
Nebraska Wesleyan senior William Whitney
is the musical director for the production. He
will use a small brass band to produce the Ger
man cabaret-style music that is much different
than what would be found in most Broadway
musicals.
“Happy End,” a Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht
musical, will play at Nebraska Wesleyan
University’s McDonald Theatre in the Elder
Memorial Speech and Theatre Center at 51st
Street and Huntington Avenue. The Nebraska
Wesleyan Department of Communication and
Theatre Arts is putting on the production with
the assistance of the university’s department of
music.
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m.
March 1-2 and March 8-9. There also will be a
matinee on March 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets arc $5
and are available at the McDonald Theatre Box
Office.
Zombie show has it all
By Patrick Hambrecnt
Music Critic
Audience members won’t get much for
their money at the Bush concert next Wednes
day — at most, probably a live performance
and a banner with the band’s name on it.
But at the White Zombie concert on Tues
day, the group presented a 12-foot devil head,
four skull-headed
| dummies hanging from
the ceiling on crosses,
a film montage of Japa
nese animation, crash
ing race cars, old hor
ror and science-fiction
movies ana cnarics
, , Manson footage, plus a
Concert whole lot of fireworks.
ReVICW And Grammy
nominated band mem
bers played, too.
/ Band frontman Rob Zombie told the
young audience it was the crowd’s duty to
support bands like his own because “the more
that happens, the sooner we’ll get rid of
[expletive] like Bush.”
With a voice like a bad cough, Rob
Zombie’s vocals rumbled like a freight train
as he did a jig from one side of the stage to
the other. His visual counterpart, Sean Yscult,
strutted that thin line between speed metal
stoicism and biker babe sultriness as she fired
out a never-ending barrage of bass lines.
But the real hero of the show may have
been the movie footage featured on a huge
screen behind the band. As one image fol
lowed the next with lightning speed, the en
tire arena seemed to go into a seizure, with a
freaky similarity to the multi-media brain
washings featured in “A Clockwork Orange”
and “Red Dawn.”
Greg Seher, a criminal justice major at the
University of Nebraska at Omaha, said his
new facial injury proved the band’s great
ness.
“I got a bloody nose within five minutes
in the mosh pit,” he said. “This is the tough
est show I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to
Metallica, Pantera. These guys rule.
“They want us to know that the devil’s
out there, but Jesus can provide for your
sins,” Seher said, “You have to be careful,
and each man chooses his own path.”
