on Feb. 24 to play a doubleheader

This weekend, the Nebraska base
ball team traveled to Arizona looking
for a win. The Cornhuskers are still
searching.
The Huskers, 2-5, dropped four
games in the Fiesta Bowl Diamond
Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Nebraska lost
on Sunday to Northwestern 13-9 for
the second time in the tournament.
Northwestern defeated the Huskers
on Saturday 13-10. The victories were
the Wildcats’ first two of the season as
they raised their record to 2-2.
Nebraska also dropped a 14-2 deci
sion to the sixth-ranked Arizona State
Sun Devils on Friday, and lost to Texas

Weekend
Wrap up
Track and field
The Nebraska men’s and women’s
track and field teams tuned up for the
19% Big Eight Indoor Championships
by competing in the Nebraska-Iowa
Athletic Conference Invite on Friday
at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Former Comhusker Petar Malesev,
the 1995 NCAA indoor national cham
pion in the high jump, won the high
jump with a mark of 7 feet, 2 1/2
inches.
Nebraska senior Robert Thomas
won the long jump with an NCAA
provisional mark of 25-3.
Sophomore Jamel Williams, who
plays linebacker for the Nebraska foot
ball team, won the 55-mcter dash with
a personal-best mark of 6.32 seconds.
For the women, sophomore Nora
Shepherd won the 1,000-meter run with
a time of 2 minutes, 54.51 seconds, the
second-fastest time in the Big Eight
this year.

Wrestling
The Nebraska wrestling team is on
a roll.
Comhusker coach Tim Neumann
hopes that roll won’t stop until the
NCAA Championships meet March
21-23 in Minneapolis.
The third-ranked Huskers, 14-3-1,
crushed Northern Iowa 31 -6 Saturday
night at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen
ter.
Northern Iowa got only two wins in
the dual, which awarded them as many
team points as they gave up forfeiting
one weight. Unfortunately for the Pan
thers, they forfeited two weight classes
to the Huskers.
Northern Iowa forfeited 118 pounds
and 134 pounds to Nebraska. At 118,
Brad Canoyer took the win and at 134,
freshman Chauncey Parker took the
forfeit.
The only Panther points came in
wins at 142 pounds — the weight at
which the Huskers have struggled all
season — and at 190 pounds. At 190,
Ryan Tobin moved up to heavyweight
to give Tolly Thompson a week off.
“Looking at the guys who are going
lo be our starters, I feel really good,”
Neumann said.
One of those starters has turned up
the heat for the last few weeks of the
season. Second-ranked 158-poundcr
Tcmoer Terry has begun his push for a
national title.
Terry defeated Dan Kjcldgaard 13
4 Saturday. Last Wednesday, after re
covering from a knee injury, he de
feated Missouri’s Todd Sacksteder 7
2.
Neumann said he met with Terry
about a week ago to discuss his run
toward becoming a national champion.
“Sometimes even the great ones
have to be reminded,” Neumann said.

Women's gym
Even though the Nebraska women’s
gymnastics team scored the fourth high
est team total in school history, it wasn’t
enough to defeat Arizona State.
The No. 10 Sun Devils set a new
school record with their 195.85
193.925 defeat of the Comhuskcrs
Friday night in Tempe, Ariz.
Cal-Berkeley finished third
(191.40) and Utah State fourth
(190.775).
Nebraska coach Dan Kcndig said
he was still happy with his team’s
performance. The No. 8 Huskers, now
8-3, set a new school record in the
uneven bars with a 49.20 effort.
But Kendig said he was concerned
with the Huskers’ shaky performance
on the balance beam.
Junior Shelly Bartlett again led the
Huskers, finishing third in the all
around with a 39.025. Bartlett also had
a career high in the uneven bars, fin
ishing‘second with a 9.90.
Senior Joy Taylor finished fourth
in the all-around with a season-high
38.875.
Nebraska freshman Misty Oxford
recorded a career-high 9.9 in vault
tying for second place. Oxford alsc
finished sixth in the all-around with £
career high 38.250.

second half.
From behind the 3-point line, the
Huskcrs hit 3-of-18 shots.
The Cowboys had three players

and placed second in rings (9.65), both
career bests. He also had a career high
on the floor (9.35), where he placed
sixth.
To be able to compete with the top
teams in the nation, Koziol said, the
Huskers will have to have four gym
nasts scoring 57 points or higher in the
all-around.
Mulholland’s performance in the
all-around was six points better than
his 50.70 score last week at Okla
homa, where he was hampered by
muscle stiffness.
He scored career bests in floor (9.4),
pommel horse (9.675), vault (9.25)
and rings (9.15).
Christie’s all-around score was a
season high, but fell short of his career
high of 57.775 at the 1995 NCAA
Championships.
Note:
• Former Husker Richard Grace,
the 1995 NCAA all-around national
champion, broke his leg and tore car
tilage while training this weekend for
the 1996 Olympic Games. He will be
sidelined for at least eight weeks.
