Bassoonist to give concert By Cherie Krueger Staff Reporter UNL’s School of Music will present bas soonist Richard Svoboda on Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Johnny Carson Theatre as part of its Kimball Recital Series. Svoboda, the principal bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a UNL alum nus, will perform along with Ann Chang-Bames and William McMullen at the free concert. Chang-Bames, a visiting assistant professor of music, will provide piano accompaniment, and McMullen, associate professor of oboe and music theory, will join Svoboda on the oboe for one piece. A Nebraska native, Svoboda attended Lex ington High School before coming to UNL, where he received a degree in music education. While at the university, he performed with the Lincoln and Omaha symphonies and was a senior soloist with the UNL University Orches tra. Since 1989 he has been a member of both the Menagerie Continued from Page 9 was too charming to sympathize with Tom. Dudley also looked too young to be the mother of two children in their 20s. Laura Wingfield, played by Laura Holman, is a shy and sensitive girl. Holman was almost too shy, covering any energy and love in Laura. Holman played much of Laura to the ground and over her shoulders as she tried to avoid eye contact with others. Unfortunately, this drowned much of Holman’s voice and hid her eyes and face from the audience. When she did show her eyes, her volume and her energy increased a thousand-fold and took the focus off of Laura’s limp. Jonas Cohen, as Jim O’Connor, was the brightest spot of the show. Cohen’s O’Connor oozed energy and charm, raising the perfor mances and energy levels of all three of his fellow actors. Cohen’s portrayal was filled with warmth and humor and is almost out of place in the cold, unfeeling home of the Wingfield’s. He was able to put up with Amanda’s nit-picking and even bring Laura out of her shell. Unfortunately, Cohen’s character doesn’t Boston Symphony Chamber Players and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Before being ap pointed to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he spent 10 seasons as principal bassoonist of the Jacksonville Symphony. In October 1995, Svoboda performed the Weber Bassoon Concerto with the Boston Sym phony under the direction of Sieji Ozawa. He also has performed with the Boston Symphony at several other concerts throughout the coun try. He now teaches at the New England Conser vatory of Music, Boston University and the Tangle wood Music Center. The program consists of five well-balanced pieces that include rhythmic and softer lyrical movements. It includes a concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Peter Schickele’s “Sum mer Serenade” with an intermission following the third piece. A reception is being held for Svoboda in room 132 of Westbrook Music Building imme diately after the recital. The public is invited to attend. Play: “The Glass Menagerie” Director: Tice L. Miller Stars: Patrick Tuttle, Kathy Dudley, Laura Holman, Jonas Cohen Company: UNL Department of Theater and Dance Grade: C Five Words: “Glass Menagerie” needs some windex appear until mid-way through the second act. Tice Miller’s direction was simple and clean, but seems over-rehearsed. Both Laura and Amanda seemed to be moving because they had been told to, not because they had a need to. At times, even Tom suffered from this. What “The Glass Menagerie” really needed was a dose of caffeine. Hopefully, the lack of energy was due to opening night jitters and not lack of inspiration from Tennessee Williams’ text. “The Glass Menagerie” runs through Sun day and then next weekend, Thursday through Sunday. ‘Me and Jezebel’ a must for all Bette Davis fans By Cherie Krueger Theater Critic Bette Davis is making a short stay in the last place you would ever expect to Find her: Lin coln. Well, it is not really Davis who is appearing in town for the next two weekends, but anyone who enjoys her sassy, domineering ways will surely want to check out “Me and Jezebel” at The Futz in the Mission Arts Building at 124 S. 9th St. “Me and Jezebel,” di rected by Layne Ehlers, who teaches theatre history at UNL, is based on the true story of a fan whose childhood dream comes true when her favorite actress comes over for dinner and ends up as a guest in her Connecticut home. Betty Buller Whitehead makes her Lincoln theater debut as Elizabeth Fuller, a writer who also believes she has psychic powers. A friend brings Davis, who is played by Renay Kushner, over for dinner one evening, and then Davis is forced to stay in her guest room because of a hotel strike. Elizabeth is overwhelmed at the thought of having her idol in her home and overlooks the star’s blunt attitude and harsh language around her young son. She is even amused by the stories about Paul Newman and the juicy gossip in songs were written about him. “But I feel more of a kinship with Ozzy than Bat Boy. I have a message if Bat Boy is out there. Get off my turf! Anyone who spends as much time whining can’t be hitting the bike trails very much. “Ozzy is my spiritual trailblazer on the bike trails of life,” Jacobson said. “Let me say that if Ozzy ever writes a song about mountain biking, my respect for him will skyrocket.” Osbourne will play with bands Kom and the Deftones at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m.; tickets are $25.50 at the door. _ uzzy Continued from Page 9 train’ and ‘Suicide Solution’ and were just kind of depressing. It fit in with the way we thought of ourselves, as apart from regular society.” Jacobson said Ozzy recently had become a mountain-bike enthusiast. Being a mountain biker himself, Jacobson said he felt a unique kinship with the singer that other fans lacked. “I remember reading that letter in that maga zine, Rollerderby, from an Ozzy fan in some sort of group home. The fan felt that he was Bat Boy, Ozzy’s sidekick. And that a lot of Ozzy’s Play: “Me and Jezebel” Director: Layne Ehlers Stars: Betty Buller Whitehead, Renay M. Kushner Company: Futz Inc. Grade: B Five Words: Bette Davis back from grave volving Joan Crawford. Having Davis in their home causes a rifl to grow between Elizabeth and her husband John, who doesn’t exactly share his wife’s fondness for the woman, but the relationship that devel ops between the two women allows Elizabeth to relish in the childhood memories of the grand mother with whom she shared her love for Davis. Whitehead’s performance is overall impres sive, showing that she is bringing plenty of talent to Lincoln’s theatrical scene. The only part that I have trouble believing is when she lights a candle and whips out the ouija board to attempt to contact Davis’ mother. Kushner’s Davis is excellent right down to her dirty mouth and the way she holds her cigarette in her gloved hand. The small stage makes for a very intimate show that is definitely worth $10. “Me and Jezebel” will run tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. and again next weekend from Thursday through Saturday. 02 Appliances 400 Roommates 05 Bicycles 410HousingWanted 10 Books 420 Rooms/Rent 13 Clothing 430 Houses/Rent 16 Computers 440 Duplex/Rent 20 Furniture 450 Apartments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing 40 Misc.
