Swimmers
begin final
Big 8 meet
By Vince D’Adamo
Staff Reporter
The Big Eight Conference farewell
tour moves to the swimming pool to
day in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Nebraska swimming and div
ing teams take on their Big Eight foes
today through Saturday in the Big Eight
Championships. Comhusker coach Cal
Bentz said the carnival atmosphere at
Big Eights made it special for the ath
letes.
“Of course, it’s extra special this
year because it’s the last Big Eight
meet,” Bentz said.
The Nebraska women, who return
four conference champions, are well
balanced. Penny Heyns, Melanie
Dodd, Julia Russell, Mikaela Lauren
and Heather Park are nationally ranked.
Nebraska is seeking its third straight
Big Eight title and seventh in the past
10 years.
On the men’s side, the Huskers are
void of returning conference champi
ons. Nebraska, however, has been stel
lar in most events. All-Americans
Francois Boshoff, Juan Benavides and
Alex Schleifman lead the way. They
will receive plenty of help from Olym
pic Festival hero Mark Bennett and
freshman sensation Josh Mathias. The
Huskers had won 14 conference titles
until last season, when they finished
behind Iowa State and Kansas.
