‘Kinesthetic Energy’ featured at Sheldon By Fred Poyner An Critic A collection of color litho graphs and miniature sculptures entitled “Kinesthetic Energy” by Mark Di Suvero is now on display at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gal lery. Di Suvero, whose art is being featured in the temporary exhibi tions gallery, is easily recognized on campus for hisred I-beam sculp ture “Old Glory,” which was pre sented as part of the Sheldon’s sculpture garden collection in 1987. Manipulation of scale is Di Suvero’s paramount ability as an artist. His reputation in the inter national world of sculpture attests to this, as does his adaptation of the lithograph medium for repro ducing sculptural visions. His lithographs both portray exploded constructions in a 2-di mensional space, and invoke im ages of urban expansion in a graf fiti scrawl of paint. As a native of New York, the artist uses the in dustrial landscape, which main tains a predictable role in his work. Through the various red, or ange, and blue color schemes, Di Suvero manages to combine im ages of mechanical abstraction with the vibrant energy found in Keith Haring’s two-tones. The dull steel sculptures, inter spersed in the gallery space, are easily overwhelmed by the bril liance of the lithographs. Their inclusion is almost construed as a distraction. “Kinesthetic Energy” will be on display through April 7. Ad mission is free. Artist Continued from Page 9 head with divine poise, she might sym bolize Nebraska’s own proud accep tance of its enormous agricultural re sponsibility. Negmat-Zoda paints with an in triguing sense of magic realism, draw ing on a middle-class hodgepodge of biblical, new-age and mythological elements. “The Battle” in particular, is a star tlingly ugly apocalyptic scene with a hazy Old Testament flavor. In it, a blonde angel grapples in a shoving match with a long-haired Middle-East ern man outside a city. The sheer ugliness of the terrain in this painting is captivating. The grimy golden ground, the hideous green and yellow sky and other decaying land marks all suggest a gross world that is about to blow up any minute — and the sooner the better. About “The Battle,” Negmat-Zoda commented only, “It’s a battle be tween negative and positive, you know, between nice and bad.” Noyes Continued from Page 9 demonstrations — and maybe even a kissing booth. Louvre Museum, eat your heart out. The kissing booth was a planned event for the party until the artists realized that none of them wanted to be the kisser in question, Noyes artist Dorothy Dane said. “I’m not going to do it; I’m one of the older ones,” Dane said. CD Continued from Page 9 of an EBN performance really impor tant. The video is organically inte grated into our work,” said Greg Deocampo, a member of EBN. Within the compact disc are inter active liner notes, including a video wall that the user can change at will. “The video wall was my idea,” Deocampo said, “back from when I was building video walls for raves in 1992. So the ability for a user-driven one seemed logical.” Even big-name bands like the Cran berries have hopped on the bandwagon with their project, “Doors and Win dows.” “The product follows the band from their early days to the concert at Woodstock,” said Mika El-Baz, a public relations agent for Island Records. El-Baz said “Doors and Windows” was selling well. Still, not all sales of Enhanced CD/ CD Extra titles have been excellent, distributors say. Part of the problem is that some Dane said negotiations were under way to find if any artist could be cajoled into kissing strangers at the party. If not, she said, “we may have to do something sneaky, like hand out chocolate kisses.” Julia Noyes, gallery founder and artist, also downplayed the kissing booth. “We’ll have a lot of things going on; I don’t know if we’re going to have a kissing booth or not. We’ll have to see,” Noyes said. Aphrodite also will “help people fall in love,” Noyes said. Aside from the events, the “Soft Enlacings” display room has the per fect gift for any woman with one too many calico ducks. Homey and inex pensive, the pieces displayed are sure to please everybody who covets their grandmother’s ceramic “Precious Moments” collection. companies eharge higher prices for their Enhanced CDs/CD Extras, said Mark Waldrep, president of AIX En tertainment. “Some companies jack up their prices. When we released ‘Rhythm of the Pridelands’ for Disney, there were two flavors, one with the video on it that was sold at software stores, and one without it, which was sold at mu sic stores. They were the same price,” he said. “Other companies tack on a few dollars.” Jimmy Dixon, director of New Media for Reprise, agreed. “Our Enhanced CDs will probably cost the exact same or just a little more. We see it as a value-add rather than something entirely separate.” Reprise’s first Enhanced CD re lease, from Mike Oldfield, will be Macintosh only. But later projects are planned to be compatible for both Macintosh and PCs. Sony Records, however, sees things differently. Dual releases have been made for albums from Toad the Wet Sprocket, Alice In Chains, Bob Dylan and more. Sony’s CD Extras tend to run between $5to $10 higher than the regular release. Two prominent artist collections at the exhibit, Janna Harsch’s horse pins and Jerene Kruse’s whimsical figu rines, are both examples of that other type of women’s art — the kind that doesn ’ t win any grants. The kind about which Gloria Steinem would rather forget. Like masculine-styled drawings of race cars and boxers, this type of art is completely unfathomable to anyone who didn’t already enjoy such sugary pink subject matter to begin with. But to even the most disinterested viewer, Kruse’s figurines of balding Romeos are a little odd. Her dopey faced and sadly smilingmen, clumsily holding Valentine’sDay cards in over sized hands, all seem doomed to live alone. Kruse’smale figurines combine the worst of both childhood and middle age insecurities, for a troubling, mel “We have a whole department, and the money does have to come from somewhere,” said Xandra Ess, direc tor of new development at Sony. In addition to the amount of time spent on the project, each CD Extra comes with an extra CD, containing Corel Drivers to aid in the usage of the CD Extra. Other Enhanced CDs that have higher price tags include Soundgarden’s“Superunknown,” Sa rah McLachlan’s “The Freedom Ses sions,” as well as releases from Bush and Moby. Dixon said she thought that full length releases were not the only place where the Enhanced CD had merit. “With singles, there is a ton of space left over, and companies spend a great deal of time on videos that are never seen more than once, so why not import that video onto the empty space on the CD?” Dixon said. Ess agreed. “We may have free multimedia, just a taste like a video, on CD5s, as a little extra bonus.” The industry is behind the En hanced CD format, and it is here to stay. ancholy vision of modem romance. Even worse are her homely, blank faced rabbits, all staring with a stoned gaze across the room while wearing frumpy fashion clothing, like vagrants hired to stand in at an L.L. Bean photo shoot. If Kruse would only enlarge her three-inch figurines to a life-size stat ure, their facial expressions of unredeemed, idiotic damnation could frighten and amaze the art world. The Valentine’s Party at Noyes Art Gallery, 119 S. Ninth St., will start at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
