Frozen ground stalls new meters By Melanie Brandert Senior Editor For students who try to park in metered spaces on East Campus to avoid walking long distances to class in the bitter cold, the wait for more meters isover. Well, almost. Although the addition of 30 meters has been approved, they will not be installed until early March. Don Hinds, operations manager for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Landscape Services, said the depart ment was waiting for warmer weather, so they could install the meters. It is not feasible for Landscape Services to do it now because the ground is fro zen, he said. “The frost (below ground) could be as deep as 12 to 18 inches,” Hinds said. “It’s a lot more labor-intensive,' and you have to work in the cold.” He said the department had planned to install meters after Christmas break, but the cold weather prevented it from doing so. “All of a sudden, it turned cold,” Hinds said. “Our high priority (now) is snow removal on campus.” In November, the Parking Advi “The frost (below ground) could be as deep as 12 to 18 inches. It's a lot more labor intensive, and you have to work in the cold. ” X DON HINDS Operations manager for Land scape Services sory Committee approved the addi tion of 10 meters at the north end of an Area 20 lot east of Keim and Plant Science halls and 20 meters in the northwest corner of an Area 6 lot west of the Activities Building. Parking Manager Tad McDowell presented the proposed locations to the committee. The senate recommended the addi tion of meters at the committee’s Oc tober meeting. Shawntell Hurtgen, president ofthe Association of Students of the Uni versity of Nebraska, said many stu dents on East Campus, not only those who had classes there, expressed a concern over inadequate meter park ing. “It was a concern for students vis iting over on East Campus who couldn’t find a place to park/’ Hurtgen said. “We took that concern and tried to make it easier for students over there.” McDowell said he thought the in crease of meters would give students more parking options. “It will give those people who are on East Campus a chance to utilize meter parking besides commuter park ing,” he said. Hurtgen said the senate would wait until it received positive feedback on the meters before members would pro pose adding more of them. “When you make big improve ments like we have, you have to examine if it is making a differ ence,” she said. “We still have two months to work with Tad McDowell and see if there are any changes that need to be made.” McDowell said there were no other plans to install more meters on either campus at this time. Updated library system makes renewals easier By Heidi White Staff Reporter Hie University of Nebraska-Lin coln libraries system is adding a program to the IRIS system to al low renewal of library materials from HuskerNet. Deb Pearson, head of circula tion for Love Library, said she hoped the system would be used by people who normally would have called to renew their library materi als. “They can do it themselves from any IRIS terminal or wherever they can get into IRIS from,” Pearson said. UNL introduced the program at the beginning of this semester after the library’s software had been up dated. There was no additional cost for the upgrade. “We added it to provide another service to people to use the librar ies,” Pearson said. To use the system, card holders should select “V> VIEW/Renew Your Own Circulation Record” from the main menu of IRIS. They should then enter their names, along with the bar code number from their UNL identification card or IRIS user’s card. Materials that are excessively overdue, being recalled or have fines exceeding $10 cannot be re newed. Materials renewal was previ ously available on the Gopher sys tem, Pearson said, but was hard to find and not easy to use. GET DRESSED BEFORE YOU Preister Continued from Page 1 plenishing them.
