Lack of money keeps
students in Lincoln
By Julie Sobczyk
Senior Reporter
Some UNL students can’t wait to
leave the frigid, bone- chilling Ne
braska winter for a tropical spring
break paradise.
But others say they don’t mind
being left behind.
Dan Montano, a sophomore archi
tecture major, said most of his friends
were headed to sunny South Padre
Island, Texas, for break.
“I would love to go to Padre, but
$400 is a lot of money to spend,”
Montano said. “Money is a major fac

Instead, he said, he will spend his
spring break in Lincoln with other
friends who couldn’t afford to go.
“I’ll just stay here and party with
my friends who are staying,” he said.
Although he may feel left out ofthe
fun at first, Montano said he would
have an advantage in the long run.
“I’ll miss out on a lot ofthe experi

I’ll be able to pay my rent come
March,” he said.
Nate Van Meter, a freshman biol

out on the traditional spring break
festivities because of a lack of money.

Meter said. “I have to pay to live in the
dorm. I have to pay tuition.”
Although he’s been working and
saving some money, he said that still
wouldn’t be enough to cover a trip.
“I have a job, but it’s not enough
for Florida,” Van Meter said.
Colby Forke, an undeclared sopho
more, was going to travel to Lake
Powell, Ariz., for spring break. But
his plans recently fell through.
“There was alack of timing, money
and a lack of people who wanted to
go,” Forke said.
But he said he had taken other road
trips, so missing one spring break
wouldn’t matter.
“I’ve been to Mardi Gras, and some
of my other friends haven’t,” he said.
“I’ll be down there someday, and one
time will be good enough."
But in the end, Forke said he would
