    Shakespeare auditions
to be held this weekend
By Kevin Bensley
Staff Reporter
Cindy Melby Phaneuf, artistic di
rector of the Nebraska Shakespeare
Festival, has announced auditions for
the company of the 1996 edition of
“Shakespeare on the Green.”
Shakespeare’s works, considered
by many to be the world’s greatest,
will be brought to life again this sum
mer at Omaha’s Elmwood Park.
The Nebraska Shakespeare Festi
val is preparing for its 10th season of
providing superior entertainment for
free, with the help of the Bard of
Stratford on Avon.
The plays to be presented this sum
mer are a comedy, “The Taming of the
Shrew,” to be directed by Phaneuf,
and “Henry V,” a historical drama,
directed by John Ahlin.
Ahlin, who is an actor/director from
New York, has been with the NSF
company for several seasons.
Phaneuf is a professor of theater at
the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
She is also the co-founder of NSF and
has directed eight previous NSF pro
ductions.
Michael Markey, managing direc
tor for the NSF, said the make-up of
the company is about “50-50” when it
comes to talent from inside and out
side the metro Omaha area. Auditions
are held in New York and Chicago, as
well as Omaha, attracting potential
players from all over the country.
“Both shows are popular with ac
tors,” Markey said, “so we do expect
a good turnout.”
The company for both plays will
total about 35 actors.
Markey said the NSF worked in
cooperation with UNO and Creighton.
It employs students from both schools
during the run, and some high schools
get in the act, as well.
Auditions will be held this week
end, both Saturday and Sunday, from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts
Building on the UNO campus. For
more information about the 1996 sea
son, auditions or supporting the Festi
val, call (402) 280-2391.

ing.”). But delivering the speeches of
his own father proved to be the most
difficult part of writing the show.
“It was just too close,” he said.
The first version of “Father-Land”
made its premiere in late 1990, but
followed a wider variety of thoughts
and themes than the current version,
he said.
“The first one was a kind of an
octopus of a play,” he said.
Although Raz likes both plays, the
latter is his preferred one.
“It was definitely a positive evolu
tion,” he said.
Raz will be in residence during
February and March as a part of the
UNL College of Fine and Performing
Arts Artists Diversity Residency Pro
gram, which brings in artists from
various backgrounds to speak on
themes of interest.
Raz’s future plans include playing
Bottom in a summer production of “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream” and try
ing to do “Father-Land” in San Fran
cisco, he said.
“I’m also going to do a round of
auditioning,” he said, “and try to start
up an apprentice program for young
sters who want to perform in the cir
cus”
Tickets for tonight’s performance
of “Father-Land” are $ 10 for the gen
eral public and $5 for students, and
are available at the Lied Center Box

Voorhees said she would focus on
dance composition in terms of line
and shape, but most importantly, en
ergy.
“They use an energy that s incred
ible, explosive,” Voorhees said.
Zollar will be the host of a discus
sion to address comments and ques
tions from the audience in the Lied’s
main auditorium immediately follow

Tickets are $24, $20 and $ 16, half

few would embrace, the piece sug

Other artists are featured as well.
Jerry Jacoby’s amazing two works,
each called simply “Geometric and
Organic forms,” exude an intense,
abstract vision of the cosmos. Carol
Devall continues to create playfully
enchanting work with her “Zebra Cat

painted with black lightning bolts that
practically begs you to take it off its
pedestal and roll it across the floor.
Someone ought to.
It would be a shame to miss “Black

opening, from 7 to 9, you might even
score some free potato chips.
