Published quarterly with support from the IJNL English Department - —.— ---,— and the University of Nebraska Press this literary magazine has feature< excellent contemporary fiction, po etry, essays and translations for th< past 70 years. Hilda Raz, editor of the magazine said she was excited about the award “This recognition means a lot to u: at this time. It's praise from our hom< stale, something very special,” Ra; said. On a national level, the Schoone lias won many awards in recent years Among these awards are the Bes Young saxophonist wins concert spot By Craig Wagner Staff Reporter The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s Young Jazz Artist Competition win ner will perform with the orchestra tonight at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center, 141 N. The first round of competition was held last fall with nine contes tants, five of whom went on to com pete in the final round Jan. 21. The competition was judged by the orchestra’s music director and mem bers of the rhythm section. The com petition had a fine turnout and was closely watched. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, and $5 for students. g THte^EPWE5PAY E AWAKE , American Essays Award in 1995, the i Best American Short Stories Award - in 1994 and prizes from Pushcart : Prizes and Best American Poetry. National recognition is great, Raz , said, but it doesn’t quite have the same . sweet taste that comes with winning at i home. ; “We’ve had lots of national recog nition, but (his is our first major recog nition from the state,” she said. “This • recognizes Prairie Schooner in a na . tional context, but (also) right here at . home.” Linda Hughes, community arts co ordinator for the Nebraska Arts Coun cil, said the award also was a signifi cant achievement. The committee that selects win ners," Hughes said, is comprised of peopl£5who represent a wide range of knowledge regarding the arts in Ne braska. Past winners of the award are among those included in the panel. Prairie Schooner is available for S6.45 a copy at the University Book store, J.L. Lee Booksellers and Barnes & Noble. Roses Continued from Page 9 Lisa is a stereotypical workahol ic — she lives for the deal. While sitting triumphantly across from a major client, she receives the star tling news that her foster father has just passed away. Unfazed, she fin ! ishes her business coolly and pro fessionally. Arriving home, Walker finds her goldfish also has died. Unable to hold in her grief any longer, she breaks down and cries in front of an open window. The next day, she goes to work as if nothing is wrong only to find an astonishing bouquet of flowers waiting for her, delivered by Farrell. Forced into a vacation by her boss, Walker sets out to discover who sent the flowers, only to dis cover that Farrell sent them himself after seeing her crying at her win dow the night before. From there, the story becomes a typical, sappy romance. But unlike many Hollywood romances, “Bed of Roses” succeeds. Film: “Bed of Roses” Stars: Christian Slater, Mary Stuart Masterson Director: Michael Goldcnberg Rating: PG (mild language) Grade: B Five Words: Valentine’s Day a little early Masterson is beautiful as the un sure and shy Walker, who dreams of a knight in shining armor but is scared to believe her dream can come true. Slater fits very well into the “nice-guy-who-has-been- burned by-love-before” role. But the story is exactly ..what shines most. A simple, innocent story, “Bed of Roses” does not try to mask what it is — a sentimental fable about true love. And in the end, that’s what keeps “Bed of Roses” from beingjust another love story. Vegas Continued from Page 9 Enter Sera (Elisabeth Shue), a streetwise prostitute who takes a lik ing to Ben, whose company fills her void by allowing her to feel needed. These poor, unfortunate souls love each other for who and what they are, and they each feed off of that. But Ben isn’t doing so hot. When ever he spends just a few hours away from the booze, he starts getting the shakes, dry-heaving and convulsing. The only way to fix this is to drink even more. And when Sera realizes that she might not be able to live with Ben in this condition, their illusions of secu rity and faith in each other begin to crumble. “Leaving Las Vegas” features in credible performances from both Cage and Shue. Cage’s versatility helped him through duds like “Trapped in Para dise,” and he’s back for revenge in “Leaving Las Vegas.” His shell-of-a man portrayal of Ben is right on the money, drawing the moviegoer into his very soul, where nobody would want to go. Shue is equally impressive, espe cially when considering her earlier work in films such as “Adventures in Babysitting” and “The Karate Kid.” She gives Sera a very hard edge, but keeps a knowledge of the dangers and hopelessness of her life. The supporting cast is full of sur prises as well, including cameos by Steven Weber (“Wings”), Valeria Golino (“Hot Shots!”) and Julian Lennon. Director Mike Figgis brings out the humanity in each of the characters, making them as realistic as possible. Figgis isn’t afraid of showingjust how cruel and heartless real life can be to anyone at anytime in any place. The soundtrack for the film is Film: “Leaving Las Vegas” Stars: Nicolas Cage, Elisabeth Shue, Julian Sands Director: Mike Figgis Rating: R (language, subject matter, nudity, violence, etc.) Grade: A Five Words: Hopeless souls share unconditional love equally exceptional, featuring perfor mances from Sting and Don Henley. Incidentally, Oscar nominations are about three weeks away, and don’t be surprised if “Leaving Las Vegas” is mentioned in a cornucopia of Acad emy Award categories. It’s gritty. It’s vicious. It’s life. It’s “Leaving Las Vegas.” CLASSIFIED INDEX 02 Appliances 400 Roommates 05 Bicycles 410 Housing Wanted 10 Books 420 Rooms/Rent 13 Clothing 430 Houses/Rent 16 Computers 440 Duplex/Rent 20 Furniture 450 Apartments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing 40 Misc.
