I™l '^■J ■ ■ Huskers’ week off to end against ISU By Antone Oseka Staff Reporter After a tough loss to top-ranked Iowa on Sunday in the finals of the Cliff Keen National Duals, the Ne braska wrestlers looked forward to a week of rest. _ That week comes to an end Sat urday when the Comhuskers travel to Ames, Iowa, for a 7:30 p.m. dual against Iowa State. Nebraska enters the meet with a 9-1-1 dual meet record . Neumann wnue me cyclones are 8-3-1. The fifth-ranked Cyclones come in after finishing sixth at the National Duals. With its performance last week, Nebraska moved up to No. 2 in the NWCA rankings, the spot previously held by Iowa State. The Huskers were third going into last weekend. “It’s going to be a tough dual,” Nebraska coach Tim Neumann said. In Neumann’s 11 years atNebraska, his team has defeated Iowa State in Ames just once, in 1989-90. Overall, Neumann is 5-9 against the Cyclones. One of the best matches of the night should come at 150 pounds. The Huskers’ Jason Kraft, ranked No. 7, takes on top-ranked Chris Bono of Iowa State. Neumann said he would make some minor changes to the lineup entering the dual. Second-ranked 158-pounder Temoer Terry won’t wrestle this week end because he’s training for the NWCA All-Star dual in Iowa City, Iowa, on Monday. Terry will be re placed by redshirt freshman Chris Steele, who placed fourth in Ames last year at the Iowa State Open. Neumann said he also planned to mix things up a bit in the lower weight classes. Darin Giese, a junior 118-pounder, will lead off for the Huskers. The usual 118-pound starter, seventh ranked Brad Canoyer, will wrestle at 126 pounds against the Cyclones. Redshirt freshman Allen Hankins will wrestle at 134 pounds for Nebraska, while 134-pound starter Tony DeAnda moves up to 142 pounds for the trip to Ames. “We’ve got guys that need to heal up, psychologically and physically,” Neumann said. “Our lineup is good enough to compete and win.” The rest of the Husker lineup should remain the same. Mike Roller will start for the Huskers at 167, followed by Erik Josephson at 177. Fourth ranked Ryan Tobin starts for Nebraska at 190, while No. 2 heavyweight Tolly Thompson will close out the meet. Neumann said he was confident that Nebraska would win the dual, but it shouldn’t look past a Bobby Dou glas-coached team. “He’ll have his kids ready.” Husker track teams to battle two schools in Saturday meet From Staff Reports The Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams will play host to Colorado State and Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon at the Bob Devariey Sports Center track. The meet begins at 11 a.m., with the running events starting at 1 p.m. Last Saturday in the Nebraska Open, Nebraska set five automatic NCAA qualifying marks and five pro visional qualifying marks. . The women set four marks, two of which were set by shot putters Paulette Mitchell and Tressa Thompson. The 1994 and 1995 outdoor triple jump champion Nicola Martial had a quali fying leap. Kathy Travis Miiller quali fied in the 200-meter dash. Angee Henry posted a pair of pro visional qualifying marks in the 55 meter dash and the triple jump. For the men, Balazs Tolgyesi set an automatic mark in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 49.12 seconds. Willie Hibler, Shane Levy and Joe Laster posted provisional qualifying marks. Huskers fight for standing in Big Eight By Jason Brunz Staff Reporter With seven days between games, the Nebraska women’s basketball team is looking for ward to getting back to Big Eight play.. The Comhuskers, 13-5 and 3-3 in the conference, travel to Ames, Iowa, to play Iowa State, 13 -4,1 -4, at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Coliseum. Coach Angela Beck said the Huskers needed to find a way to play better in the first half if they hoped to remain in contention for the Big Eight title. “We’re on the edge as far as the Big Eight goes,” Beck said. “We have played well, but we haven’t played well enough.” One thing Nebraska needs to work on is playing more consis tently in the first half, Beck said. In the Huskers’ 69-61 loss at Colorado last Sunday, Nebraska trailed 37-23 at halftime. After a slow start, the Huskers outscored the Buffaloes 38-32 in the sec ond half. At Oklahoma State, the Huskers trailed 43-20 at hal f time, but outscored the Cow girls 43-29 in the second half. “We have been outscored in the first half, but we’ve played a lot better in the second half,” Beck said. “We need to put to gether a better first half.” This game also is a home coming for Husker assistant coach Theresa Becker. Becker coached the Cyclones for the past two years before returning to Nebraska this year. Beck said she didn’t think there would be any problems with Becker returning to Ames. “She cares a lot about those kids,” Beck said. “I just want us to play our game and stay as emotional as possible.” Vaughn Continued from Page 7 ' sonal goals aside.” Kansas has defeated three ranked teams this season, but Vaughn said last week’s hard-fought 80-78 victory at Colorado showed the Jayhawks that the most challenging portion of the season came during conference play. He said every team in the Big Eight would be playing at a higher level against Kansas. The Jayhawks will take their 3-0 conference record into Lincoln this ‘Sunday for a 2 p.m. game with Ne braska. Although Comhusker coach Danny Nee criticized the atmosphere at the Bob Devaney Sports Center earlier this week, Vaughn said Lincoln was still a tough place to plav. “I’ve really respected the fans there,” Vaughn said. “They are loud the whole course of the game. I’m hoping they re going to take it easy on us this year. “Going down to Lincoln is going to be very tough for us. It’s a big chal lenge.” At the Devaney Center last season, Vaughn played 39 minutes and had nine points and nine assists. Vaughn said he was more con cerned about dictating the defensive tempo and eliminating mental mis takes than he was with how the Jayhawks matched up with Nebraska. ."1 EATABLE SALE” (JANUARY 26 THRU JANUARY 31) Buy any one National Championship item and get 50% OFF... buy a second item and get 40% OFF and every other National Championship item you buy is 30% OFF the regular price!!!
