‘Tangora’ piece will make its debut at Lied concert By Patrick Hambrecht Senior Reporter World-renowned marimba player Makoto Nakura will wield four mal lets independently, playing complex songs and counter-songs all at once for his Lied Center concert Saturday. Nakura’s “Tangora” will make its debut at the concert. “Tangora” is a piece he recently commissioned and helped write with British composer Nigel Clarke. “I asked Nigel to do a song con nected with the sea, and asked him to do something about Mediterranean,” Nakura said. “But he wanted to dc something Polynesian. Tangora is a very energetic, primitive god.” Clarke wrote the piece with both a distinct southern style, modeled frorr Polynesian music, and a “marimbaistic” rather than a “pianistic” style, Nakura said. Most composers have little knowl edge of the marimba, making a piece written specifically for his instrument a luxury, Nakura said, so he coached Clarke on the specific nuances of the marimba. “To let the instrument sing i s a very difficult thing,” Nakura said. To truly understand the marimba, he said, “you would probably have to dedicate your life to it.” Although the marimba is a com plex instrument, the simplicity and BREAK I_I I .1 I -1 CZZZZD I-1 1 I I 1 • PER PERSON DEPENDING ON DESTINATION / BREAK DATES / LENGTH Of STAT. ^800-StfNCHAS* TOLL FREE INFORMATION & RESERVATIONS OR SURF OVER TO OUR WEI SITE At http://wEww.sunchAsa.com easily grasped mechanics of its design — a series of wooden pipes ranging from large to small—make it hard to date. It may have appeared spontane ously in several parts of the world, or perhaps spread from somewhere in Asia. Nakura began playing the instru ment at age 8, under a private teacher. To really master any instrument, a student needs to learn early on and develop his ear, he said. For older students, he said, “it is difficult to master any instrument, but if you love your instrument, it’s not hard.” But no matter how long a musician has been playing, Johann Sebastian Bach always represents a challenge, Nakura said. In the concert, he will exhibit his own dazzling mix of com plex rhythms and flowing harmonies in his performance of a Bach sonata. Besides classical music, one of Nakura’s favorite songs is the Irish tune “The Last Road of Summer.” Nakura said he would play a personal variation of the song as a homage to Celtic music. “Some quality of Irish music touches my heart; I can’t explain,” Nakura said. Tickets are on sale for S18 and S14 at the Lied Center, and are half price for minors and students of UNL, Ne braska Wesleyan or Doane. The show will start at 8 p.m. Photo courtesy of Young Concert Artists, Inc. Faulkner also will play a harpsichord in the first half of her program. In addition, Mary Murrell Faulkner will accom pany her on Kimball Hall’s large pipe organ, Kennedy said. “I think that this music is easy to listen to,” Kennedy said. “It’s not unmelodic and actually quite tuneful.” Composers featured in her recital include Henry Purcell, Heinrich Schutz, and George Frederick Handel. The 20th century segment highlights Randall Thompson, Samuel Barber, Daniel Pinkham and Horatio Parker. “My favorite part of the re cital process is collaborating with musicians and experi menting with what will work as far as the colors of instruments and finding appropriate aspects , of the music,” Kennedy said. Sunday’s concert will begin at 3 p.m., and admission is free. /\II1C1 lCcLIl nccui Associations^^ Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke 1 _iiBBg 02 Appliances 400 Roommates 05 Bicycles 410 Housing Wanted 10 Books 420 Rooms/Rent 13 Clothing 430 Houses/Rent 16 Computers 440 Duplex/Rent 20 Furniture 450 Apartments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing 40 Misc.
