Illinois bands coming to Lincoln By Patrick Hambrecht Senior Reporter Two fantastic bands from Belleville, 111., will play at Knickerbockers, 901 O St., Friday and Saturday night. Although fragile porcelain mice’s thrash-rap style doesn’t sound much like the easy-going Bob, both share a sensibility that could have come from only the same small, Midwestern suburb. Bob has a lot in common with Social Distortion, sharing both a friendly, sentimental punk attitude and a folksy, near-country sound. And just like Social Distortion’s Mike Ness, you get the feeling this band takes pains to create a non sexist environment for its younger fans to nurture and grow within. Lead vocalist Don Bailey sings a lot about old saddles, sweeping out the shed and hitting the booze. Especially on songs like “Tramp,” “Ttiis Road” and “Insane,” he seems like a Steinbeck character from “Cannery Row” who just stumbled up to the bar stage at open-micro phone, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Exhibiting some great guitar work on their new CD “Earl,” this band needs only a radio-favorable single to make it big, so see them now before they go on a national tour and never return. Fragile porcelain mice, on the other hand, is a dump truck full of bad karma. With songs like “cup of spit” and “concept of grie f,” a sunny disposition for this band is obvi ously out of the question. Still, there is somethingparticu larly dour about fragile porcelain mice’s music above and beyond the hopeless din of most white hard core rap bands. Into the usual black caldron of police brutality, war atrocities and racial hatred, the band mixes a stirring portrayal of small town poverty and domestic abuse in “southside of luck.” Fragile porcelain mice uses a strict formula of one interesting guitar noise per song, followed by a mechanical onslaught ofpunk-metal shredding. But a few more innova tive sounds and a little less “jung jung-jung” bar chords wouldn’t hurt for its next album. Wide will open for fragile por celain mice on Friday, followed by Bob and Shithookon Saturday. Both shows begin at 10 p.m. and have a $3 cover charge. S.S. Lied to drop anchor at the Carnival in Rio By Lane Hickenbottom ; Staff Reporter Get ready and all aboard the S.S. Lied as it sails off for a Carnival in Rio Saturday night, Norah Goebel-George, the Lied Center’s director of marketing and media relations, said the Carnival in Rio, which is sponsored by the Friends of Lied, was “a one-of-a-kind event.” This virtual cruise will kick off at 6:30p.m. in the lobby and the Steinhart Room with the Captain’s cocktail re ception. Later, dinner will be served. Stroll ing musicians will entertain dinner guests throughout the evening. Afterward, a variety of entertain ment events will be presented. Among these will be a comedy cabaret show featuring several local volunteer acts, a casino with play money and black jack tables, dancing with the “Big Band Sound” and a karaoke bar. The inaugural cruise of the S.S. Lied in 1994 earned $40,000, inore than half of what all other Lied fund raisers combined earned that year, Goebel-George said. Gail McNair, coordinator of Lied Outreach, said the real credit for the event should go to its volunteers. “The only way this could be pos sible is through all of the volunteer work,” she said. “They have been working for months.” Tickets for this year’s event are still available through the Lied Center box office for $150, $100 and $45. 00s For Sale Used washer, dryer, refrigerator or range, delivered, guaranteed and payments of only $25 for three months. ^That's a deal!' 466-6252.
