Prayers
Continued from Page 9
“Some people may think that’s not
really sincere religion,” Schmid said.
“But something that worries me is the
sameness that appears in our prayers
when we do them off the cuff.”
“Dawn in the Afternoon” is in
tended “to put you more in tune with
what the will of God is,” Schmid said.
“Prayer is not just talking, but it’s
listening as well.”
Schmid gathered the prayers in this
collection for more than a decade, and
he rewrote them several times in an
attempt to keep them fresh and al i ve in
the face of changing situations.
' The book is available from the First
Presbyterian Church office, or, Schmid
said, “you can come to church on
Sunday and pick one up.”

dren while managing a hotel full of
wealthy, inconsiderate jerks.
As this discomforting family
drama unfolds, the cruel owner
(Faye Dunaway) of the Majestic
Hotel harasses her hotel employees
and a fat guest of the hotel (Glenn
Shadix) constantly falls down or is
hit on the head with heavy objects.
Both ofthese painful reoccurrences
are supposed to be wild family fun.
Instead, watching employees
being abused by both their superi
ors and the hotel’s customers for
more than an hour proves to be
excruciating for anyone with a smid
gen of a social conscience.
In one of the more “tasteful”
scenes, Alexander promises his
children a vacation at a different
hotel, so his family could “nag”
new hotel employees and “make
their lives miserable,” too. Yippee.
Alexander’s generosity peaks in
a scene where Dunaway orders an
employee to be removed for bump
ing into her. Instead of Firing the
maid, Alexander offers the blue
collar worker a week’s paid vaca
tion in exchange for pretending to

This offer, which might be un
derstood as an act of kindness if he
was working for Saddam Hussein
at the Hotel Iraq, shows only the
manager’s cowardice and unwill
ingness to stand up for his workers
in any situation.
Throughout this supply-side
zaniness, the orangutan chirps and
protrudes his lips listlessly. Occa
sionally he swings wildly through
the hotel, down the maintenance
shafts and through the windows, as
though he is looking for a way out
of this movie—just like the rest of
us.
