All of the following 7-inch singles arc dirt cheap, cost between two and five dollars, and are easily superior to most of what can be found at Blockbuster Music. Here arc some of the newest and neatest. Dame Darcy is not only the preferred palm reader of Thurston Moore and Guirtney Love, she also writes the frighteningly hys terical comic book “Mcatcake” and has played on some wonderful records. Her latest is “Will O’ The Wisp Octo pus,” a spooky low-fi extravaganza, would be apt accompaniment for whatever might occur at Tinkerbcll’s funeral. The song tells the story of a magical beast that “lurks inside of pools and wells” and lures small children to their death. Yikcs! The record can be ordered at Villa Villa Kula Records, 230A Tremont Street 3#, Boston, Mass., 02116. The accompanying comic book, Meatcake 4#, can be ordered via a free catalog that can be received by calling Fantagraphics Books at 1 -800-657 1100. All About Chad’s vocalist Ben Reiser has a lot in common with Daniel Johnston and sings the song of insecure geeky guys every where. While the A-side recording, “I know a girl” is only fair, the two B-sides “You’re too popular” and You are the woman” arc great. All About Chad’s sad whimsy is offset by a nice sense of humor, and this fun single can be ordered at Big Pop, P.O. Box 12870, Philadelphia, Pa., 19108. Famous Monsters exemplifies rockabilly stage nonsense at its silly best. The cover features the band members Frankie Stein, Devil Doll and Vampire Girl all dressed like performers in a Las Vegas haunted house. From the “Werewolf Wiggle” to the “Blood of Frankenstein,” there’s enough camp on this disk to fill your Vault of Horrors with room to spare. Write to Estrus Records, P.O. Box 2125, Bellingham, Wash., 98227 for a free catalog. Bloody Mess and the Skabs are punk at its best — showy, offensive and mean. From “I Like Sin” to “Learning to Hate” this album is fabulously dumb, and can be had for only $5 from Black and Blue Records, Suite 152, 400D Putnam Pike, Smithfield, R.I., 02917. Many of these singles and more also can be had at Zero Street Records, 1411 O St. All of these singles arc notably superior, be cause there’s not much point in reviewing a bad album by an obscure band from no where. — Patrick Hambrecht Faith Bible Church Let us be your hometown church ...away from home. 434-6636 Worship Celebration at 9:00 am Currently meeting at Lincoln Christian School 84th & Old Cheney Road Believers Fellowship A Cluu'LMruttuy fellowship ofBellevery Sunday School - 9 a.m. Morning Worship - 10 a.m. 464-2162 Now Meeting at the Youth Complex Bldg, on State Fair Park Road (east of Devaney Sports Center) Find God’s plan for your life in 1 996 HARVEST COMMUNITY CHURCH Sunday Worship 10:30 AM I Meeting at Everett School, 1 Ith & “FT" St ^g fnendh people ♦ up-to-date music ♦ practical messages Don't leave any stone unturned... including CORNERSTONE The Campus Ministry of: The Disciples of Christ Church Sundays 10:00 Fellowship The Presbyterian Church 10:30 Worship The United Methodist Church Tuesday 6:00 Choir Practice United Church of Christ Thursday 10:00 Don's Doughnuts •Weekly Study Groups •Volunteer Community Service •Random Fun Campus Pastors: Larry Doerr & Melissa Draper The Cornerstone is an open community of faith.
