The pursuit of a national championship has come to an end for the Nebraska Comhuskers, and for the first time in 23 years, the Huskers’ season had a happy ending. With a 24-17 victory over the Miami Hurricanes at the Orange Bowl in Miami on New Year’s Night, the Huskers gave Tom Osborne his first national title as a head coach at Nebraska. As fullback Cory Schlesinger tumbled into the end zone with his second touchdown against the Hurricanes, the monkey was lifted from Osborne’s back, and more than a decade of near misses and year-end frustration was finally over. Schlesinger’s run capped Nebraska’s first perfect season since 1971 and ended seven straight unhappy new years for Nebraska. “We have been waiting 23 years for this, and now we’re right back where we belong — on top,” Huskcr defensive tackle Terry Connealy said. “We won this for the whole state of Ne braska.” January 2,1994 f|WM&; S21 Tommie Frazier didn’t want to talk to anyone after Nebraska’s 18-16 loss to Florida State in the Orange Bowl. So for a while, he didn’t. With Turner Gill draped over him, Frazier twisted his way through a crowd of well-wish ers, who had just watched the sophomore quarterback surpri se the nation by weaving his way through Florida State’s defense. Head down, Frazier showed no expression as Seminole coaches and players approached him with congratulations for his performance and consolation for the loss. “I noticed them,” Frazier said later of the crowds. “But I didn’t feel like talking.” Game pay '95 -“= ^1 # January 2,7:30 p.m. Nebraska Florida SE 7 Reggie Baul 5-8 170 LT 75 Chris Dishman 6-3 310 LG 67 Aaron Taylor 6-1 305 C 54 Aaron Graham 6-4 275 RG 69 Steve Ott 6-4 290 RT 70 Eric Anderson 6-4 300 TE 87 Mark Gilman 6-4 240 WB33 Clester Johnson 5-11 210 QB 15 Tommie Frazier 6-2 210 FB 22 Jeff Makovicka 5-11 225 IB 30 Ahman Green 6-0 210 PK 20 Kris Brown 5-11 190 WR28 Chris Doering 6-4 191 LT 74 Jason Odom 6-5 298 LG 78 Reggie Green 6-7 296 C 71 Jeff Mitchell 6-5 284 RG 75 Donnie Young 6-4 299 RT 79 Mo Collins 6-5 297 TE 91 Tremayne Allen 6-2 225 WR19 Ike Hilliard 6-0 182 QB 7 Danny Wuerffel 6-2 211 FB 23 Dwayne Mobley 5-10 222 RB 25 Elijah Williams 5-10 185 PK 14 Bart Edmiston -5-10 170 LOLB 93 Jared Tomich 6-2 250 DT 55 Christian Peter 6-3 300 DT 95 Jason Peter 6-4 275 ROLB 98 Grant Wistrom 6-5 240 SAM 56 Jay Foreman 6-1 220 MIKE 41 Phil Ellis 6-2 225 WILL 43 Terrell Farley 6-0 200 LCB 20 Michael Booker 6-2 190 RCB 8 Tyrone Williams 6-0 185 ROV 10 MikeMinter 5-10 190 FS 9 Tony Veland 6-2 205 P 19 Jesse Kosch 6-0 180 LE 40 Johnie Church 6-3 264 LT 97 David Barnard 6-2 290 RT 94 Ed Chester 6-4 267 RE 67 Mark Campbell 6-2 281 ILB 48 Dexter Daniels 6-1 231 ILB 44 James Bates 6-1 223 NB 11 Ben Hanks 6-2 221 CB 17 Fred Weary 5-10 178 FS 33 Teako Brown 5-11 189 SS 4 Lawrence Wright 6-1 206 CB 9 Anthone Lott 5-9 183 P 87 Robby Stevenson 6-1 181 Aarnn .Qtnokolhorn/nM Fiesta Bowl history launched by Huskers By Mike Kluck Senior Reporter Fiesta Bowl Executive Director John Junker is supposed to show no [ ——1 favoritism to either lean i piaying minis year’sFiestaBowl. But Junker can’t help but express fondness at having 11 -0 Nebraska in this year’s title clash. 1 ;^r | junker said his h.nLaffection stemmed JUflKer back 20 years when a 10-1 Nebraska squad decided to play an undefeated Arizona State team in the fifth Fiesta Bowl. “That game was extremely impor tant because Nebraska came in as one of the highest ranked teams we ever had with the largest national expo sure,” Junker said. “It was one of the first comers the Fiesta Bowl turned. It gave the bowl quite a bit of credibility. It also became one of the great match ups of the year in all bowl games.” Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said before the game, the Huskers were expecting to be invited to a different bowl. “The Fiesta Bowl, at that time was a little bit of a secondary bowl,” Osborne said. “I don’t know if we had to talk them into it, but I think there was some disillusionment.” In the game, the Huskers, whose only other loss was to eventual na tional champion Oklahoma, held a 14-6 lead, but Arizona State scored 11 points in the final stanza to win 17-14 and finish No. 2 in the polls. Osborne said he remembered the game because Nebraska quarterback Vince Ferragamo had thrown an inters ception in the first quarter. Osborne benched him in favor of Terry Luck. “Luck had been practicing a little better,” Osborne said. “We lost the game 17-14 and I never heard the end of it.” In 1982, the Fiesta Bowl moved to New Year’s Day and received its high est television rating at that time, pit ting Penn State against Southern Cal and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen. Junker said the 1982 sellout CFowd of 71,053 proved to Fiesta Bowl offi cials that their game had made the leap to being one of the top bowls. The Fiesta Bowl hosted its first national title game on Jan. 2, 1987, when Penn State defeated Miami 14 10. Junker said that game is still the most watched college game of all time. Junker said the 1986 Fiesta Bowl, in which Michigan topped Nebraska 27-23 was also a big game for the Fiesta Bowl. “That game matched two of the premier programs in the country and helped provide very strong television ratings,” Junker said.
