ASUN prepares to accomplish goals next semester By Kasey Kerber Staff Reporter The Association of Students of the Univer sity of Nebraska will use next semester to take care of current projects and complete its plat form goals, said President Shawntell Hurtgen. Some issues from this semester may carry over, Hurtgen said, such as the proposed amend ments to the Student Code of Conduct and the Admissions and Advising Committee’s upcom ing vote on three ASUN proposals. The Academic Senate recently passed two of the four amendments proposed by the -■■■■— I., Women’s Faculty Caucus to stiffen penalties for students who commit violent crimes. ASUN unanimously passed a senate bill op posing the proposed changes. The student senate felt die proposed changes unfairly discriminate against athletes and “lime light” students. The changes would punish stu dents before they were proven guilty, senators said. Hurtgen said ASUN would wait until after break to let the issue “cool down.” However, its involvement in it is not over. Hurtgen said the senate will continue to work for improved advising. She has submitted three proposals to theAdmissions and Advising Com mittee for consideration, in addition to a list of 20 other advising concerns collected from stu dents and organizations. The three proposals include documentation of advising by faculty, making more education or up-to-date literature available to faculty and making withdrawal/drop forms universal and simple throughout all the colleges. The Admission and Advising Committee will vote (m the proposals at its Dec. 13 meeting. Hurtgen said the decision was a likely topic for next semester’s first ASUN meeting Jan. 10. %ASUN also will work toward accomplish ing the Impact Party’s platform goals. “For me, the first meeting of the second se mester will be a refocusing of the past issues and providing of fresh ideas,” Hurtgen said. “Currently, senators have each been assigned items off a list and their progress will be up dated at the meeting.” In looking ahead to the new semester, Hurtgen said she is pleased with what ASUN has accomplished, but it is not done working. “If there’s anything I’ve learned as president, it’s that nothing happens overnight. The key to getting things done is be persistent, and that’s what ASUN must be this next semester.” I RANDOLPH I VACUUMS $ i 3 ’^ranniesd rDrawers\ ' Very Special ] Teddy Bears i 1 Collectibles $ Country | Santas & M Christmas ' 1537 N.
