NU looks to rebound from first loss
By Mike Kluck
Staff Reporter
After losing for the first time on
Saturday, the Nebraska women’s bas
ketball team wants to get back on the
winning track tonight against Kent
State.
But Nebraska coach Angela Beck
said the 4-1 Cornhuskers would face a
difficult assignment in the 7 p.m. game
at Kent, Ohio.
“We’re goingtohave to really come
ready to play,” Beck said. “It’s going
to be an extremely tough road trip for
us. It’s going to be a big game for us to
get, so we just have to regroup and
refocus.”

Oregon State, Beck said the
Comhuskers spent an hour and a half
in team meetings to re-establish team
goals and roles.
But the Huskers are now focused
on dealing with the 2-1 Golden
Flashes’ pressing and attacking man
to-man defenses. Two statistics about
Kent State stand out in Beck’s mind.
Kent State averages 11 steals a game
and forces its opponents into 20 turn
overs.
“When I saw the number of steals
Kent State averages a game, that made
me kind of ill because that’s a weak
ness for us,” Beck said. “We’re going
to have to do a better job of taking care
of the basketball down there.”
Nebraska is averaging 23.8 turn
overs a game while forcing its oppo
nents into 27.2 turnovers.
Kent State coach Bob Lindsay said
he expected the Golden Flashes to
perform better than they did last year
in Lincoln during their 91-66 loss to
the Huskers. A win tonight will give
Lindsay his 100th career coaching vic
tory.
Lindsay said the Golden Flashes
would have to control Nebraska’s Tina
McClain and AnnaDeForge. DeForge
is averaging 19 points a game for the
Huskers, while McClain is averaging
10.8 points. Both are averaging 6.8
rebounds a game.
“They’re a team with a couple of
players that can cause you trouble,”
Lindsay said. “McClain is a good ath
lete, and I wish we had her on our
team.”
The Golden Flashes return all five
starters from last year’s 17-10 squad,
but sophomore Gwen Harley is out
with a knee injury.
The Golden Flashes do return Mid
American Conference Player of die
Year Amy Sherry, who is averaging
20.3 points and 10.3 rebounds a game
and has scored in double figures in all
three games.
“Amy Sherry is really a nice
player,” Beck said. “She can create,
and she scored 27 points in their last
game. She is a real tough player.”

attack, just as Colorado did. Against
the Buffaloes, the Huskers threw for
241 yards and ran for 226, their sec
ond lowest rushing total of the season.
“I don’t think there is really any
team that can stop the option,” he said.
“They might be able to stop it 30,40,
50 percent of the time, but as far as
going out there and stopping it consis
tently, I don’t think any team in the
country can do that.”
Based solely on statistics, how
ever, Nebraska’s pass defense appears
to be faced with just as many prob
lems as the Gators’ rush defense.
Husker foes have completed 50 per
cent of their passes for an average of
215 yards a game.
Florida’s passing attack ranks sec
ond in the nation behind Nevada, av
eraging 361 yards a game. Gator quar
