ompson was named Big Eight wres
tler of the week along with Oklahoma
State’s Eric Guerrero.
At the Northern Open in Madison,
Wis., on Friday, Thompson, a junior
who is No. 1 in the country at heavy
weight, won the heavyweight division
by defeating two wrestlers ranked in
the top five.
Thompson posted a 5-2 win over
fifth-ranked Tony Vaughn of Purdue
in the semifinals and followed with a
3-2 victory over Minnesota’s Billy
Pierce, ranked fourth, in the finals.
Four of the nation’s top five heavy
weights wrestled at the Northern Open.
'Hie Comhuskers’ next action will
be Friday and Saturday at the Las
Vegas Invitational in Nevada.

receives Camp award
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) —
Ohio State’s Eddie George has won
the Walter Camp Football
Foundation’s player-of-the-year
award.
George, a 6-foot-3, 227-pound
senior tailback from Philadelphia,
rushed 303 times thisyear for 1,826
yards and scored 23 touchdowns.
Ohio State was upset by Michigan
31 -23 on Saturday, destroying the
Buckeyes’ chances at a national
-title.

The Camp award is selected by
Division I-A coaches and sports

Trophy on Monday at Ohio State’s
Woody Hayes Athletic Center. He
and teammates Terry Glenn and
Orlando Pace will be honored as
Camp All-Americans at the
organization’s banquet Feb. 17 at
Yale. Nebraska quarterback
Tommie Frazier also will be hon
ored as a Camp All-American.
George is the first Ohio State
player to win the award since Archie
Griffin — now an Ohio State ath
letic administrator — in 1974 and
1975.

Before Friday, Frazier had 16
touchdowns passing and 14 rushing
— an average of three touchdowns a
game.
But after only accounting for one
score against the Sooners, Frazier said
his only concern was the win.
“I don’t know if it hurts me, but
right now I really don’t care about
that,” he said. “That’s left in the voters
hands. The best guy’s going to win it.
If that’s me, then I’ll win it. If that’s
Eddie George, then he’s going to win
it.
“I can ’ t go out there and think about
if my performance is going to help me
win the Heisman or not. I was out
there just concentrating on Okla
homa.”
Frazier said he would rather credit
the Oklahoma defense than blame him
self and the Nebraska offense.
“I was just playing my game as
usual,” he said. “They were doing
some things that caught us off-guard.
I don’t think I played a bad game. I
went out there and did everything I
normally do. I really can’t grade it
until I look at the tape.”

to the District VII GTE Academic
All-America team Monday.
Comhusker center Aaron Graham
and linebacker Ryan Terwilliger also
made the team last year. In addition to
Graham and Terwilliger, fullback
Brian Schuster, offensive lineman
Steve Ott and Steve Volin, and line
backer Grant Wistrom made the team.
Graham, a senior from Denton,
Texas, who was a second-team Aca
demic All-American last year, also
was named to the Hitachi/College
Football Association scholar-athlete
team.
Also, Nebraska linebacker Jared
Tomich was named the Big Eight de
fensive player of the week.

he wasn’t too interested in George’s.
“If I happen to have the TV on that
channel, I’ll probably watch it,” Frazier
said ofthe Michigan-Ohio State game.
“But I’m not going to make an effort to
watch it.”

Huskers’ rebounding effort in the
championship game. Senior center

In Saturday night’s 114-106 semi
final overtime win over Oregon, Boone
and Lue each scored 30 points and
dished out nine assists. Lue’s 30 points
broke Erick Strickland’s freshman
scoring record set in 1993, and he
added five steals. Nebraska, which
trailed 30-11 midway through the first
half, led the Ducks 98-95 with less
than 30 seconds to play in regulation.
Boone was sent to the free-throw
line, but missed both shots, and Or
egon point guard Kenya Wilkins sank
a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play,
sending the game into overtime.
On Friday night, Nebraska beat
Toledo 72-59 behind 23 points from
Strickland. Strickland and Boone were
named to the all-tournament team.
