After defeating Gonzaga 87-40 on Friday, the Cornhuskers opened the championship game by outscoring the Wildcats 20-5 in the first six minutes of the game. During that span, Husker sopho more Anna DeForge, the tournament’s most valuable player, scored eight of her team-high 21 points while senior Pyra Aarden, who was named to the all-tournahient team, added seven. “We just came out unbelievably strong,” Nebraska coach Angela Beck said. “If you saw the first seven min utes, it was just brilliant basketball. I think we shocked them with the level of our defense to start out.” In the next 10 minutes, however, the Wildcats outscored Nebraska 21 2. But then the Huskers reapplied their defensive pressure and limited the Wildcats to one field goal in the last four minutes of the half while regain ing a 42-29 halftime lead. “The first and last five minutes of each half, we look to be really aggres sive,” DeForge said. “We don’t want to be outscored, outrebounded; we want to lead everything.” Oklahoma Continued from Page 7 thing would happen,” McGee said. “That’s been going on all year, and you can’t do things like that.” Running back Jerald Moore was held to a season-low 39 yards on 14 carries. He said the Sooners’ lack of offense frustrated him. “If we wouldn’t have made those two big turnovers, things could have been different,” Moore said. The Oklahoma defense did have some success, though, holding the Nebraska offense to only two touch downs. The Sooners held Heisman Trophy candidate Tommie Frazier to 35 yards rushing and a 12-for-25, 128-yard passing performance. “Our linebackers are about as quick and react about as well as any I’ve ever been around,” Schnellenberger said. Game Continued from Page 6 ball on them. Not as much, but we did move the ball.” Nebraska added a final score on its last possession of the game after a 13 play, 80-yard drive. Fullback Joel Makovicka rumbled in from 17 yards out to give Nebraska a 37-0 lead with 44 seconds remaining in the game. “I think Oklahoma came up and played hard,” Osborne said. “I was probably more apprehensive about this game than I’ve been any game for a long time. I felt that they had good athletes and the Oklahoma State game (the 12-0 loss to the Cowboys Nov. 11) would rqfllly focus them. And I’ve never known an Oklahoma team not to play hard against Nebraska.” In the final game of the Big Eight Conference, which will expand to the Big 12 next season, Nebraska held Oklahoma to 94 yards rushing and 241 total yards. It also capped the Huskers’ third consecutive undefeated regular sea son. “I think this year’s team will be one that I’ll always remember for many reasons,” Osborne said. “I’ve been very satisfied by the way they have been able to focus and pull together. I think they’ve been a team in the true sense of the word.” Boone, Lue score 30 in win From Staff Reports The Nebraska basketball team played Minnesota in the finals of the Big Island Invita tional Sunday night in Hilo, Ha waii. The Cornhuskers opened their season Friday with a 72-59 win over Toledo. Behind 30 points apiece from true fresh man point guard Tyronn Lue and senior guard Jaron Boone, the Huskers beat Oregon 114-106 in overtime on Saturday night. Pettit Continued from Page 6 committee, headed by Cindy Lewis of Hofstra, did a good job of dividing the nation’s top teams. “The important thing to us,” Pettit said, “probably more im portant than anything, is that if we win, we have the opportunity to host regionals. That’s really big.” Nebraska had no problems this weekend at the Civic Audi torium in Omaha, defeating Oklahoma 15-7, 15-9, 15-5 on Friday and hammering Iowa State 15-4,15-5,15-1 in the Big Eight Tournament championship match on Saturday. Senior middle blocker Allison Weston, who hit .442 in the tournament, was named the most valuable player for the sec ond straight year, and was joined on the all-tournament team by Johnson, senior Billie Winsett and sophomore Lisa Reitsma.
