Costly mistakes leave Sooners
asking "what if about big loss

Garrick McGee said he could ask
“what if’ all day about the Sooners’
loss to Nebraska.
What if Nebraska’s Jamel Will
iams hadn’t intercepted starting quar
terback Eric Moore’s pass and re
turned it for a touchdown in the first
quarter?
What if Nebraska’s Tony Veland
hadn’t scooped up James Allen’s
fumble at the 45-yard line and re
turned it for a touchdown to give the
Comhuskers a 20-0 lead?
What if the Sooners hadn’t com
mitted nine penalties, three turnovers
and many other mistakes?
Oklahoma coach Howard
Schnellenberger said if Oklahoma-had
the maturity that Nebraska had, the
outcome may have been different.
“I really would like to see these two
teams play again without all our give
aways and mistakes,” Schnellenberger
said. “The two teams that played out
there today are a lot closer than 37
points apart.”
Instead, the Sooners won’t know
how well they could have challenged
the Huskers after their 37-0 loss Fri
day at Memorial Stadium. The loss
dropped Oklahoma to 5-5-1 for the
year.
After trailing 10-0 at the end of the
first quarter, McGee replaced Moore
at quarterback, hoping to change the
momentum in the game.
McGee played the rest of the game,
but the outcome hinged on the number
of turnovers Oklahoma had.
“You can ‘if all day, maybe it
would have been better, maybe it
would have been worse,” McGee said.
“If you don’t turn the ball over, you
can win every game. We turned it over
and we paid the price.”
With McGee at quarterback, the
Sooners moved the ball well at times,
but they couldn’t get on the scoreboard.
McGee, who did not play the pre
vious week against Oklahoma State,
said the offense couldn’t get the breaks
it needed.
