Three Husker runners
to compete at NCAA's
By David Wilson
Staff Reporter
Senior Brady Bonsall and sopho
mores Nora Shepherd and Christina
Blackmer have been selected to repre
sent Nebraska at the NCAA Cross
Country Championships today in
Ames, Iowa.
Bonsall’s attempt toqualify for the
meet came down to the last leg of the
District V Championships, Nov. 11 in
Stillwater, Okla.
The captain of the men’s team,
Bonsall passed two runners in the last
1,000 meters of the district race to
finish seventh with a time of 31 min
utes, 21.6 seconds. He was one of the
final runners to quality for the na
tional meet.
“This is definitely the high point.
I’ve been there before, and I’m running
as well, at this point in the year, as I ever
have,” said Bonsall, who also ran in last
year’s championship meet. “I’m really
running better right now than I was last
year at this time. My goal would be (to
finish) in the top 30.”
Comhusker coach Jay Dirksen said
Bonsall, who finished as the No. 1
Husker runner in every meet this fall,
had shown steady improvement all
season.
“He has been running really well
this year and I think he is going to have
a chance to finish in the top 50,”
Dirksen said. “This is a meet where if
you’ve been there before, the experi
ence really pays off.”
Twenty-two teams of seven run
ners each and an additional 30 indi
vidual runners will compete in the
meet. Nebraska did not qualify as a
team.
Shepherd placed second in the
women’s 5,000-meter run at the dis
trict meet, qualifying for the champi
onship meet with a time of 17:54.10.
Shepherd, who finished 105th at
last year’s national meet, said she was
setting her goal much higher this year.
“I’m hoping to come back an All
American,” she said.
In addition to the top 25 overall
runners earning All-American status,
the top 25 American finishers also
will earn All-American honors in both
the men’s and women’s divisions.
“She is running better now than she
ever has,” said Dirksen, who said he
expected Shepherd to finish between
50th and 70th at the NCAA meet.
Blackmer, who finished 10th at the
district meet with a time of 18:15.30,
was not selected for the national meet
until Nov. 13. Blackmer, who
redshirted a year ago after running at
NCAA’s meet as a freshman in 1993,
was chosen as one of six additional
women to compete in the champion
ship meet.
“She’s really been running well
lately,” said Dirksen, who expects
Blackmer to finish in the top half.

where we want to be.”
Nebraska’s effort this fall, Romjue
said, will help the Huskers position
themselves to qualify for the NCAA
Regionals next spring.
Romjue said Friesen and Madden,
both freshmen, improved a great deal
this season even though they made
some freshman mistakes.
“They have to work on learning
golf courses and getting themselves
ready to play,” Romj ue said. “But I ’ ve
been pleased with what they have done.
“All five of our players had their
moments this season, and all were up
and down. Trent probably has been
the most consistent, but all have Divi
sion I talent.”
During the off-season, Romjue said
the golfers would work on stretching
and running and do some weight lift
ing. He said he hoped the players
would have an opportunity to head
south and golf during the semester
break.
“It really benefits us if they can get
to a warm weather climate and golf
during the break,” Romjue said. “If
things work out right, some of our
guys have made arrangements to go to
the Fiesta Bowl apd golf there^ (in
Arizona).”
