Big bucks convince
Big 12 to hold game
DALLAS (AP) — Once they were
assured ABC would open its wallet
wider, Big 12 athletic directors voted
Wednesday to play an annual cham
pionship football game beginning
Dec. 7,1996, at the Trans World Dome
in St. Louis.
Final approval for the contest, to
be played by the winners of the North
and South divisions of the upcoming
league, must come from league presi
dents at their meeting Nov. 30 to Dec.

“If I had to guess. I’d guess they’d
approve it,” said Kansas athletic direc
tor Bob Frederick, who ran
Wednesday’s meeting.
The vote for the game was not
unanimous, although it’s believed that
Nebraska was the lone holdout. Offi
cials pointed out that St. Louis was a
unanimous choice, and they heaped
praise on the city and facility.

raised its bid of $2.5 million.
Commissioner Steve Hatched said
the payout was close to the $4 million
ABC spent on the Southeastern Con

Two ABC officials left the meet

ABC Sports executive David Downs
said, “We clearly want them to play
