A fter 2 1 /2 months of blowout s, the top-ranked Cornhuskers were chal lenged. No. 3 Florida stretched Ne braska to its limit, finally falling short as the Huskers won 15-4, 15-13, Il ls, 14-16, 15-7. The Husker victory before a crowd of 4,163 fans lasted 2 hours and 31 minutes. Nebraska was paced by sophomore middle blocker Lisa Reitsma, whose 37 kills were the second most ever in Nebraska history, one short of Enid Schonewise ’ s school record of 3 Skills set against Arizona State in 1986. Reitsma also had 18 digs and five block assists. The Huskers, who had seven players record 12 or more attacks—compared toonly three for the Gators—improved to 24-1 on the season, winning their 23rd straight match. Nebraska’s con secutive game win streak ended at 68. Florida fell to 28-1. “1 think what we anticipated would happen did happen,” Nebraska coach Terry Pettit said. “We thought this would be a very tough match. It was very tough. It just so happens that when it came down to crunch time, we did a great job.” Allison Weston contributed 20 kills, 10 digs and eight block assists. Setter Christy Johnson recorded a ca reer-high 10 kills, 80 set assists and hit .643. Billie Winsett added 18 killsand 15 digs. Nebraska, which trailed at some point in all five games, broke a 2-2 tie in the first game and cruised to an easy win. The second game, though, was a different story. Florida led 8-2 before Nebraska stormed back, sidingout seven straight times and eventually tying the game at lO.TheHuskersled 13-11,but Florida came back to tie the game at 13. A kill by Johnson and a long hit by Gator outside hitter Jenny Wood gave Ne braska the victory. Nebraska jumped to a 6-3 lead in the third game before Florida came back to tie the score at six. After Florida led 13-8, the Huskers rallied to get within 13-11, but the Gators won the game on a kill by Aycan Gokberk. Gokberk, a first-team All-Ameri can from Izmir, Turkey, led Florida with 30 kills and hit .348. “We have talked about this all year, about getting in this position and how we would handle it,” Pettit said. “This will be a great teaching tape for us.” Pettit said freshman Jaime Krondak, who notched a career-high 16 digs, along with freshman Fiona Nepo, have given the Huskers the depth they were missing a year ago. Krondak and Nepo played during much of the fourth and fifth games. A 10-3 Florida run in the fourth game erased a 3-0 Nebraska lead. But the Huskers battled back and got within three points before the Gators pulled away and built a 14-8 lead. Nebraska scored six straight points and tied the game at 14 on a Jen McFadden kill, but a Gokberk kill and a Gokberk block tied the match at two games apiece. The two teams stayed even early in the rally scoring fifth game with Nebraska’s first three points coming on Reitsma kills. With Nebraska lead ing 7-6 and Johnson serving, the Husk ers rattled off seven straight points and eventually won the match on Reitsma’s seventh kill of the game. “The difference between Nebraska winning and losing really was Reitsma,” Florida coach Mary Wise said. “We had nothing to counter a 6 foot-4 lefty who hit so well. “Volleyball is a game of runs, and Nebraska made one at the right time.” Pettit said Nebraska needed Sunday’s match. “We were almost to the point where it would be better to lose a five-game match than win a three-game match,” Pettit said.
