Mistaken identity causes media stir By Jeff Zeleny Senior Reporter A familiar name broadcast on a police scanner Monday turned the Lincoln rumor mill to high speed. Shortly after noon Monday, a resi dent of a southeast Lincoln home called police and said that a “Tommy Frazier” refused to leave the house. When po lice arrived, the resident said every thing was under control. “That person was not there when officers arrived. That ended the inves tigation,” said Assistant Lincoln Po lice Chief John Becker. There is no indication that the man on the police broadcast is the same “Tommie Frazier” as the Heisman Trophy candidate. However, the me dia jumped when they heard the two words ring out. A “Tommy Frazier” and a “Tom Fraser” also are listed in the Lincoln telephone directory. At the time the police call was made, the well-known Frazier was being examined at a Lin coln hospital, Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said. Nevertheless, a flood of media called police. The rumor spread to the Nebraska Athletic Department by about 3:30 p.m., Osborne said. He took the mat ter in stride following Monday’s foot ball practice. “With the reputation we have and being ranked number one, we will have a lot of scrutiny,” Osborne said. “This is part of it.” Osborne said when he was con tacted by University Police Chief Ken Cauble, he investigated the rumor with the Lincoln police chief. “I called Tom Casady. He said they checked it out, but as far as they were concerned there was nothing to it. I said, ‘Well good,”’ Osborne said. Police have no idea which man the broadcast was intended for — or if there ever was an emergency. “ We have not made any arrests and we have not anticipated making any arrests,” Becker said. Osborne said he discussed the mat ter with Frazier before practice. “He said it is just wild,” Osborne said of Frazier. Staff Reporter Mike Kiuck contributed to this report. Ann Heermann. “The place was kind of a mess, I guess.” The Hurricane, 1118 0 St., has recently been under scrutiny from the Lincoln City Council and the state liquor commission. The coun cil revoked the bar’s liquor license last month. The bar’s appeal will be heard Thursday by the state liquor commission. Police said $440 worth of prop erty damage was done to the inside of the club. There were no signs of forced entry, Heermann said. Bar employees are being routinely ques tioned, she said. Holes were punched into the walls and ceiling, glasses and ash trays were smashed throughout the building and a door to a liquor storage room also was damaged, Heermann said. Nancy Sevage, a co-owner of the bar, reported the damage to police early Friday morning. Police have identified no suspects in the felony theft case. Hurricane man agement did not return telephone calls seeking comment Monday. Sexual Assault Dwayne Greer was charged Monday with nine felony counts in connection with the Friday rape of a UNL freshman and the August burglary of her apartment. Greer, 920 F St., was being held in the Lancaster County jail on $1 million bond. He was formally charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree false imprisonment, second-degree as sault, two counts of burglary and four counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony. Police allege Greer entered the 19-year-old student’s apartment about 4:45 a.m. Friday at 17th and B streets and attacked her while she was sleeping. According to police, the student was tied with a tele phone cord and stabbed twice in the leg when she began screaming. Police began to suspect Greer when an officer saw a man that matched the rape suspect’s descrip tion near Ninth and F streets about 5 a.m. Friday. According to court documents, when police served a search war rant on Greer’s apartment they dis covered a cellular phone that matched a phone stolen from the apartment. Bloody jeans also were found in Greer’s apartment, the court document stated. Greer, 25, will appear in court Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. Get No Service Charge Checking And A FREE Gift From FirsTier! f Get a terrific FREE gift when you open any personal checking account at FirsTier.
