Jeter Bantam Books It’sbeen 13 years since the movie “Blade Runner” flashed onto the big screen, with Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, Daryl Hannah as a Pris replicant, Rutger Hauer as the deadly Roy Batty replicant and Sean Young as the beautifully mysteri ous Rachael. “Blade Runner” was also based on Philip K. Dick’s novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and the book conflicts with some elements of the movie. “The Edge of Human” is more of a sequel to “DADES?” than of the movie “Blade Runner”; but if you’ve seen “Blade Runner” (ei ther the director’s cut or the regular version), you can follow the book with just a few points. And it is worth it. Well, well worth it. Sebastian, the kooky little in ventor, is still alive and was not, as implied in the film, killed by Roy. He plays a fairly large part in “The Edge of Human.” He has had three limbs amputated and is wandering around with a monstrosity, who might better be known as the (some what) resurrected Pris. Rachael does have a four-year life span, as she hoards her time with Deckard preciously. She is virtually never seen in “The Edge of Human.” Pris, however, was not a replicant. She was, in fact, a human who wanted to be a replicant so badly, she had a somatic conver sion, taking on the abilities of replicants. Thus, Deckard is wanted for murder. In addition to all of this, Deckard has been brought back into Los Angeles by Sarah Tyrell, the suc cessor to Anson Tyrell, who died at the Roy Batty replicant’s hands. Sarah was the gene source for Rachael. There was a sixth replicant, and it is still running free. Bryant said one was when he first spoke to Deckard, all the way back in “Blade Runner” and Deckard only killed... retired ... four, and one was killed trying to escape. That means there is still a replicant loose in LA. Add into all of this the fact that ' Deckard’s old partner, Dave Houlden, has been kidnapped from the hospital where he was recover ing from the attack he suffered at the beginning of “Blade Runner.” He was kidnapped by Roy Batty — not the replicant, but the origi nal. And Batty and Houlden think they know who the sixth replicant is — Deckard. Jeter has a style that entrances, simplistic yet lushly vivid. His gift is for forming concrete images, al though his action can occasionally become slightly jarring, like the breakout scene with Houlden and Batty. “The Edge of Human” is a non stop rush, with philosophical con versations, veiled and unveiled metaphors, as well as a great deal to think about. The idea of a replicant con spiracy floods this work and im- . bues it with a touch of Oliver Stone. It really is a shame that Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer are prob ably too old now to make this into a movie. “Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human” is one of the best science fiction books to hit the shelves in the past year. It is well worth get ting, at least in paperback (when that happens), but certainly think about the hardcover. It is as invigo rating and as thought-provoking as anything else with the words “Blade Runner” on it. —Cliff A.
