Win in Austin helps Huskers
prime for shot at national title
by Antone Oseka
Staft Reporter “
The Nebraska volleyball team
hopes its win over No. 7 Texas Satur
day is the start of something great.
The top-ranked Comhuskers kept
their winning streaks of 60 straight
games and 20 straight matches intact
with a 15-4,15-13,15-4 win over the
Longhorns at Austin, Texas.
Now the Huskers want to build on
their momentum because they play
two ranked teams in the next week.
“I believe this was a crucial win for
what’sahead with Notre Dame, Florida
and the NCAAs,” Nebraska assistant
coach Cathy Noth said. “It was good
for our hopes of a national champion
ship.”
In front of a crowd of 2,432 fans in
Austin, only the second game proved to
be much of a challenge for Nebraska.
Trailing 12-5 in the second game,
the Huskers started to play defense,
Noth said. The defensive play of jun
iors Kate Crnich and Maria Hedbeck
spearheaded the Huskers’ rally. Cmich
finished the match with a team-high
12 digs, and Hedbeck finished with 10
digs on the night.
“It was a great game for us; it was
exciting,” Noth said.
The key for the Huskers was serv
ing, Noth said. Senior Billie Winsett
claimed a team-high three of the nine
service aces that Nebraska recorded
for the match.
Sophomore Lisa Reitsma led the
Huskers with 19 kills, while senior
Allison Weston added 16 more kills for
the Huskers. Weston edged out Reitsma
in hitting percentage, though, hitting
.583 in the match, with only two errors
on 24 attempts. Reitsma hit .485, with
only three errors in 33 attempts.
Noth said the Huskers were well
prepared for the match against Texas,
but they would need even more prepa
ration for the upcoming week.
The Huskers face No. 12 Notre
Dame at the NU Coliseum in a 7:30
match Tuesday night. Then they goon
the road to play Oklahoma at Norman,
Okla., on Friday, and then back to
Lincoln to face off against No. 2
Florida on Sunday.
Noth said Notre Dame was the
team’s first concern.
“Notre Dame is a good team, and
they are well-coached and disci
plined,” she said. “We just need to
keep on going from Texas.”
