have not lost a game since Aug. 26 to

The Husker defense kept Iowa

Junior middle blocker Jen
McFadden said the defense stepped
up.
“I thought we had a lot of good
rallies. Defense is really the key to our
game,” McFadden said. “If we can
keep the balls at the floor and get the
ball to Giristy (Johnson) consistently,
then we’re a great ball team.”
Coach Terry Pettit said that Iowa
State was intimidated by Nebraska’s
size and strength.
“I don ’ t think Iowa State competed
like they normally would in the first
couple of games,” he said. “Offense
comes and goes, but defense keeps
you in the matches.
“We know we can attack with any
body; that’s not the issue for us, the
issue is to play better defense, so we
did a better job there.”
Specifically, Pettit said that senior
outside hitter Kate Cmich, McFadden,
freshman outside hitter Fiona Nepo
and junior outside hitter Maria
Hedbeck were impressive defensively.
- The Huskers now begin a stretch of
six matches in 15 days when they face
Kansas State Wednesday at the Coli

Austin, Texas, on Nov. 4 to face eighth
ranked Texas.

Senior linebacker Matt Russell, Colorado’s

of their effort. They were beaten by a better

Fans followed Jordan wherever he went.
During the pregame warmups, fans hoped to see
a trademark Jordan slam dunk. They got what
they wanted.
During the game, though, they had to wait
until the fourth quarter for a Jordan dunk. But he
finally broke away from the defense and slammed
it home with 2:10 left in the game.
“I’ve played here before,” Jordan said. “It’s
a college crowd with college enthusiasm. It’s
good. It’s always fun to come where you haven’t
• played and for the fans to see what NBA basket
ball is all about.”
After the game, children crowded around the
locker room, hoping to get a glimpse of Jordan,
but that was all they got. Jordan quickly left
through a side door at the arena, avoiding the
that’s about all I can say,” he said.
The Cornhuskers had the same number of
shots on goal as the Trojans, but they just
couldn’t put the ball in the net.

turnovers or penalties and allowed no sacks.
Meanwhile, Colorado had two turnovers, 12
penalties and was sacked twice.
“We have a pretty mature group of players,”
Osborne said. “They seem to rise to the chal
lenge. A lot of them have played in the Orange
Bowl, so this type of thing doesn’t intimidate
them at all. In the matter of fact, it brings out the
best in a lot of them.
rooting for them. They are from the Big Eight,
and they are our representative.”
Neuheisel, a former UCLA quarterback and
assistant coach who came to Colorado as an
assistant coach a year ago, met with his young
team and coaching staff for more than 15 min
utes following the game.
“I told them I was very proud of their effort,”
he said. “I was very proud of the size of the heart
they showed. We were fightingto the bitter end.
“It would be an absolute shame and a sin if
we didn’t come out and play as hard as possible
these last three games, and give these guys a ride
out, hopefully in a New Year’s Day venue.”
mob of autograph seekers.
The Jordan mania didn’t end there, though.
When the Bulls’ bus left the arena, a crowd of
fans chased after the bus in front of the arena on
Court Street.
Besides Jordan and Piatkowski, the fans also
took a liking to Dennis Rodman, who was
thrown out of the game in the third quarter. !!
After Rodman was ejected, the fans started
chanting, “We want Rodman.” But the 6-foot-8
forward wasn’t coming back.
“He’s got to control his temper,” Jordan
said. “Those refs are tough, and he has to
understand it’s not going to take much to get
him out of the game.”
The scoreboard showed the Clippers as the
home team, but even with Piatkowski, the Clip
pers knew they weren’t the fan favorites.
“We knew they were rooting for Pike,” Wil
liams said, “not the Clippers.”
