String quartet rocks lied By Emily Wray Music Critic When the Turtle Island String Quartet took the stage at the Lied - Center for Per Lied brining Arts » Ponlnr Saturday wear uenier inga rainbow of silk shirts and tennis shoes amid a forest of fake bushes, the classical music lover knew that 1 something was askew. Welcome to the wonderful world of string quartets. Typically, this art form is the epitome of classical music. Not so with Turtle Island. The quartet proceeded to rock the Lied Center with its unique brand of popular music played to a sparse but friendly crowd. As expected, the rapport that the performers shared with the crowd was excellent. Talking into a viola’s acoustic microphone to introduce a piece was a stroke of pure genius that the audience enjoyed immensely. Musically, there were a couple of inconsistencies, but the show was excellent overall. Most of the popular pieces chal lenged the performers to sound like other instruments or were original compositions. It’sobvious that typi cal violin techniques are not pre ferred when trying to sound like a trumpet. Unfortunately, this sound is not achieved all of the time, even with the unique technical methods em ployed. One instance of success was in the Jimi Hendrix piece, “Gypsy Eyes.” With a minimal amount of imagination, one could envision an electric guitar instead of a viola playing the complicated riffs and licks that were the virtuoso Hendrix’s trademarks. One violinist was excellent in keeping Hendrix’s memory alive and singing the vocals. In fact, this piece was worth the price of the concert. The other shortcoming of the group was its lack ofjazz. Hearing popular music and expecting a con cert advertised as jazz are two dif ferent things. When the group did delight the listener with long-expected jazz, it was short-lived. The quartet’s abil ity to sound like saxophones in a Count Basie classic was right on target. The sound of cymbals was even evident during the piece. The quartet definitely did justice to Basie’s jazz. Even with all of these bright spots, the concert became some what tedious with the popular mu sic sounding like it employed the same themes. In retrospect, the concert, even with its rough edges was a unique learning experience. For those who missed Saturday ’ s performance, NETV will broadcast the show within the next month, -PEOPLE-1 ‘Showgirls’ star losing face NEW YORK — Elizabeth Berkley has gone from “red-hot hype to ice-cold chill faster than a $5 lap dance,” Entertainment Weekly said. The magazine said that since “Showgirls” bottomed out at the box office, Berkley was dumped by her talent agency, left without any follow-up feature role and “harshly dismissed by Hollywood as a no talcnt bimbo.” Paul Verhoeven, the film’s di rector, said he warned Berkley that baring her all could be a risky ca reer move. “I told her six months ago, ‘If people don’t like the movie because of the society it portrays, they won’t write about that. They’ll write that you can’t act, and you can’t dance.’ I told her that,” Verhoeven said. — Associated Press Symphony Continued from Page 9 Landis is no stranger to the stage.
