Bob said, “Hmm, I am but a speck taking part in a vast, con nected universe... Cool.” Jim said, “What? I’m not the center of the universe? And money isn’t the most important thing? No!” Then, one day, the big, grumpy public official saw Jim and said, “LSD made this boy insane; therefore, no one shall have it.” What the public official failed to recognize was that Jim was already insane long before he ever took acid. Adam Cederlind Senior Russian via e-mail Plan ahead This past Saturday, my husband and I went to the women’s volley ball game following the football game. We both love sports and attend as many events as we can. This particular event was asking for a big turnout and was held at Devaney hoping to break atten dance records. It was a very upsetting experience for many people. We came in through the north doors. There were hundreds of people there early wanting to get good seats and were all excited. Then they opened the doors. It was a joke! They opened one door and had one ticket taker for hundreds of people massed in front of all the doors. It turned into mass confu sion, shoving, cussing and turned into an angry hostile crowd. We eventually made it in the building and enjoyed watching the women stomp Colorado. However, the planning for this event left a lot to be desired. If you are thinking big and want big crowds, then we need to have enough staff available to handle big crowds. * . I think this was a bad thing to happen for such a great program. Kathy Thompson Lied Center via e-mail Color mo B&W I just wanted to point out a couple of inaccurate statements that seriously weakened Doug Peters’ Tuesday attack on Ted Turner. First of all, the colorization fad has all but died, save for Fox video’s reissues of the Shirley Temple films and a recent TNT broadcast of Boys’ Town. ; Citizen ICane, as you took pains to fancifully describe, has never been colorized. Including Gone with the Wind on your list was simply ludicrous, as it was a color film in the first place. Secondly, I’m not sure that even one hundred “classic” films exist in Bret Gottschall/DN his catalog, let alone the “hun dreds” you claim he’s “bastard ized.” Sure, the MGM, RKO, UA and pre-’50’s Warner films include perhaps two or three dozen signifi cant films, a great many good ones, and thousands of mediocre movies. Not only do you “digress,” you exaggerate. It would have been better to point out that Turner’s distributor has done a complete about-face regarding colorization by including the words “In glorious Black and White” on the boxes of many of the latest video reissues of such films. Perhaps this would have under scored your point that he is simply buying up our culture and market ing it with slick packaging. On the other hand, had it not been for the proliferation of video cassettes and the rise of video moguls like Turner, our only real chance to experience this heritage would be on broadcast"television, where they edit films and interrupt them with commercials. Christian Erickson Graduate Student Music via e-mail Edltortaiwri** * This letter is addressed to the author of the Oct. 24 editorial in the Daily Nebraskan. We are part of the UNL under graduate/graduate program cur rently preparing for a model United Nations conference in Chicago which simulates the workings of the UN. At this conference, UNL represents the nations of Brazil and Yemen. In this endeavor; we have built a strong working knowledge of the current state of the United Nations and its projects. Some of the points you make about the United Nations are accurate, and we agree with your stance that there are problems with the United Nations, including the duplication of roles and corruption within the Secretariat. nowever, one or your para graphs is patently wrong. You state that there are five members of the Security Council and that they can veto any U.N. resolution. There are, in fact, fifteen members of the Security Council, with the five you men tioned (China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States) holding permanent seats and veto power over Security Council Resolutions only. Furthermore, the Security Council holds no direct power over the resolutions passed by the committees of the General Assem bly or over those of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), both of which have passed many resolutions the United States did not agree with. You state that there are chal lenges ahead for the U.N. in the next 50 years — apparently education about its function and makeup should be added to your list.
