playing more compared to playing
sparingly earlier in the season.
The Huskers should be focused
for the rest of the season after play
ing before an NCAA-record crowd
of 11,529 fans against Colorado.
Before Nebraska set an NCAA
attendance record last Saturday, two
weeks ago, before the Kansas bas
ketball team had its first practice,
the Jayhawks and Kansas State
played in front of a crowd of more
than 14,000 fans.
Noth said the Huskers wouldn’t
be intimidated by the size of Allen
Fieldhouse.
“As long as there is no midnight
basketball practice, we’ll be all
right,” Noth said. “Playing in
Devaney last week will help us in
the long run.”
NOTE:
• Middle blocker Allison
Weston was named Big Eight player
of the week. Weston had 12 kills
against Colorado, and she overtook
Eileen Shannon as the Huskers’ aH
time kill leader on her ninth kill of
the match Saturday.

behind him.”
Childs said Phillips’ main goal at
Nebraska was to get a degree, and he
chose Nebraska to get an education.
That could lead Phillips to playing his
senior season next year as a Husker.
“Football and all that is fine and
dandy,” Childs said, “and as he found
out this year, you can be here today
and gone tomorrow.”
Childs said Phillips wasn’t con
cerned about the fans’ reaction to his
return.
“He doesn’t care as long as he
knows that everything is cleared up,
and everything is cleared up with
Coach Osborne and the rest of the
football players,” Childs said. “He’s
really not worried about what fans are
thinking as far as how they’ll react to
him coming back. If they react in a
positive manner, that’s fine. If they
react to him in a negative manner, then
that’s fine too.”
With Phillips in the locker room
Monday, Childs said having him
around made it seem like old times.
“He’s the same Lawrence Phillips
as he was in the locker room when the
incident happened,” Childs said. “He’s
been gone. Basically everybody is
looking at it like he’s had an illness,
and he came back.”
NOTE:
• I-back Damon Benning missed
practice with a hamstring injury. I
back James Sims hurt his hip midway
through practice, but returned to do
some running.
Quarterback Brook Berringer and
MIKE linebacker Phil Ellis both prac
ticed.
Coach Tom Osborne said Phillips
looked a guy who hadn’t practiced in
six weeks. , |
“It will take some time for him to
play effectively,” Osborne said.
