Nebraska pummels Colorado during record-breaking match By Trevor Parks Senior Reporter Only two questions were in doubt going into Nebraska’s sweep of Colo rado Saturday night. Would Allison Weston break the Nebraska record for career kills? Would the crowd be large enough to break the NCAA attendance record of 11,114 fans set at Wisconsin two years ago? The answers to those questions eventually would be yes, but the doubt surrounding the outcome of the match didn’t last long. - The top-ranked Volleyball Z 7-0 in the Big Eight with a 15-4, 15-3, 15-2 demolishing of the5 Buffaloes, who dropped to 10 9 and 2-4, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. coining into tnc match, Weston needed nine kills to break Eileen Shannon’s school record, ' and in the third game Weston’s kill broke the record, giving Nebraska a 2 1 lead. Nebraska coach Terry Pettit said he didn’t want to stop the game to honor Weston. “Wc didn’t slop and hand her the ball because it’s important, but it isn’t our focus,” Pettit said. “It’s something more special to Allison’s teammates than it is to her.” In between the second and third games, any doubt of an NCAA atten dance reeord ended. The record crowd of 11,529 fans was announced, break ing the old record of 11,114 set at Madison, Wis., in the 1993 NCAA final match between Long Beach State and Penn State. Weston, who had a match-high 12 kills, said the crowd played an impor tant part in Nebraska’s first home match since Oct. 4. “It’s nice to be back home, espe cially coming back to this,” Weston said. Pettit said his players disposed of Colorado quickly because they were excited to play, something he hadn’t >een in a while. “We were excited at the fan turn out, and that’s what I hoped it would do,” Pettit said. In the first game, the Buffaloes iumped out to a 2-0 lead before Ne braska scored the next 12 points to make it 12-2. In that span, Weston had tier first three kills of the match to help the Huskers. The Buffaloes cut the score to 12 4 on a kill by Rachel Wacholder. Ne braska took a 14-4 lead with a Stacie Maser kill and won the match 15-4 when Colorado’s Sarah Lodge, who had a team-high seven kills, unleashed a shot that hit the net antenna. In the second game, Nebraska con tinued its momentum with Maria Hedbeck serving, jumping out to a 5 0 lead. The Huskers took a 9-1 lead when Courtney Owens hit a shot long. Colorado pulled to within 9-3, but Weston’s seventh kill and a Jen McFadden kill gave Nebraska an 11 3 lead. After Jaime Krondak entered the match to serve, the Huskers scored the final four points of the game, in cluding a Weston kill that tied Shannon’s all-time kill record. After Weston established the record, Nebraska scored seven straight points to take a 9-1 lead in the third game. After Colorado scored on a block by Lodge, the Huskers scored the final six points of the game. The game ended fittingly on Weston’s 12th kill of the night and 1,525th of her career. Colorado coach Brad Saindon said his staff had trouble finding five play ers in college volleyball history who were better than Weston. “She presents so many problems in terms of trying to match someone up on her,” Saindon said. “She’s very strong, she’s quick and she’s very experienced.” KSU Continued from Page 6 who had two sacks, three quarterback hurries and six tackles. “It was kind of a personal thing with us. We wanted to go out and play well and show every body that statistically they may be better than us, but in a head-to-head competition, they weren’t better than us.” Husker cornerback Michael Booker intercepted a Miller pass on Kansas State’s first possession of the second half, and the Wildcats moved backwards the next time they touched the ball, ending with a fourth-down and-37 at their own 4-yard line. “Miller was getting rattled,” said WILL linebacker Terrell Farley, who in his First start recorded a team-high nine tackles and two sacks. “As we kept hitting him, I was looking at him. He was getting off the ground and shaking his head in pain.” AA The Support Group.
