Wakeland Continued from Page 9 played almost 700 dates and sold more than 10,000 records. “We’re real proud of how far we got on our own,” said vocalist/gui tarist Chris Sullivan. “And maybe if there were an extra 20 hours in a day, we’d keep doing it all our selves, but science hasn’t taken us there yet.” “Magnetic,” is a strong collec tion of pop hooks and harmonies that will catch the ear of most lis teners with its feel-good sound, rhythmic sway and suave lyrics. Wakeland plays tonight at the Ranch Bowl, 1600 S. 72nd St., with Gwen Mars and Maids of Gravity. The show starts about 9:30, and tickets are $5. The markdown on the album is because The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There For You” is played twice, the short version at the beginning and the long version at the end. Lou Reed contributes a new song, his first new piece of work ' since 1992’s “Magic & Loss.” It’s a beautiful, bitter ballad from the master of street poetry. The other eagerly awaited new track is “Stain Yer Blood” by Paul Westerberg, a song that does not disappoint. The CD also features covers of the Beach Boys’ “In My Room” by Grant Lee Buffalo, Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” by the Pre-' tenders, and Jonathan Edwards’ “Sunshine,” also by Paul Westerberg. Throw in some B-sides—“1 Go Blind” by Hootie & the Blowfish and “It’s a Free World Baby” by R.E.M., both of which are good songs. The final product is a great col lection of songs worth the price of the CD, whether you’re a “Friends” fan or not. — Cliff A.
