Snyder, in his seventh year at Kan sas State, said he and Kansas coach Glen Mason felt the same about the current rankings. “I think this is a tribute to high school football and college football in the state of Kansas,” Snyder said. “We have two very fine schools and very fine programs. But we also realize that you’re only as good as your last game. I think Glen feels the same. Mason, whohas been the Jayhawks’ coach since 1988, downplayed the rankings, and said that the jump did “absolutely nothing” to Kansas. ” But McCamey wasn’t as quick to downplay what the high rankings meant to the conference. “It’s great for the Big Eight,” he said. “There are some really outstand ingteams in the Big Eight this year. To have five teams in the top 12 says something.” Colorado witnessed the balance of the Big Eight first-hand Saturday, dropping its first conference game to a team other than Nebraska since a 17 14 loss to Oklahoma in 1988. NOTES: • ABC confirmed that it will show the Nebraska-Kansas State game Oct. 21. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. • Linebacker Phil Ellis (broken foot), defensive tackle Jason Peter (sore hamstring) and quarterback Brook Berringer (sore knee) all were held out of practice Monday. Sherman Continued from Page 7 relied upon as the top rebounding forward, can play in sync offen sively as a small forward. You’ll see Bernard Gamer, the national junior college player of the year, crashing the boards and causing havoc in the paint. Mikki Moore has the potential to be one of the top two centers in the conference running the floor, and Chester Surles, no longer an intimidated freshman, is in much better shape. Jason Glock and Tom Wald provide experience, depth and x_ clutch shooting at the guard spots. Venson Hamilton, Nebraska’s first-ever recruit from the high school hoops factory known na tionally as the Oak Hill Academy, redshirt freshman Leif Nelson and senior Chris Sallee give the Husk ers four legitimate centers. Andy Markowski and Chad Ideus, both home-grown redshirt freshmen, are versatile forwards with a year of practice under their belts and the ability to be stars of the future. , This is not the year to jump off the Nebraska bandwagon. Heading down the home stretch toward the Big 12, Nebraska needs the support of its students now more than ever. The last time the Huskers failed to make the tournament, 1990, they came back with a 26-win season, the best in school history. The 1995 Huskers have the same talent and leadership, if not better, to do that again. It would be sad if the students weren’t there to see it. Sherman is a junior news-editorial major and the Daily Nebraskan assis tant sports editor. IF AT FIRST YOU SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AGAIN.
