100 killed in earthquake on
Indonesia’s Sumatra Island
SUNGAIPENUH, Indonesia—
Trucks carted the bodies of earth
quake victims through a torrential
rain Sunday to the edge of town
where soldiers labored to dig
enough graves.
The work was slow the day after
100 people died in a pre-dawn quake
on the island of Sumatra, as the
downpour filled the graves with
water and turned the ground into
mire.
Another 700 people were seri
ously injured in the magnitude-7
quake, and 10,000 buildings col
lapsed or were seriously damaged.
The epicenter was near this town of
40,000 in a remote south-central
valley.
The earthquake struck at 1:09
a.ni., when most people in this re
mote valley in south-central
Sumatra’s Jambi province were
asleep. Tremors were felt hundreds
of miles away in Singapore and
Malaysia.
“We were all in deep sleep when
the house started to shake and
sway,” said Ngatimin, a municipal
worker who like many Indonesians
uses only one name.
“I heard hysterical cries and
screams.... The lights went off and
we were scrambling to get out in
pitch darkness.”
Five strong aftershocks on Sun
day drove survivors out of their
homes and into the open, where
they huddled in the rain and wept.

Pope: Democracy needs virtue
BALTIMORE — Preaching in the
cradleofU.S. Catholicism, Pope John
Paul II urged the faithful Sunday to
heed America’s founding fathers and
bring religious convictions to bear on
political issues, especially those af
fecting human life “from conception
to natural death.”
“Every generation of Americans
needs to know that freedom consists
not in doing what we like, but in hav
ing the right to do what we ought,”
John Paul told 50,000 followers who
filled a baseball stadium.
The scoreboard displayed the mes
sage, “He is here,” and the soul group
Boyz II Men serenaded the pontiff as
he entered the ballpark in his
popemobile. The stadium had not
rocked to such cheers since Cal Ripken
broke Lou Gehrig’s 56-year-old record
of playing in 2,130 straight games.
Later, in the final addressofhis fourth
U.S. pilgrimage, the pope insisted that
the American democracy must not
merely guarantee religious freedom, but
also act on religious principles.
“Democracy needs virtue, if it is
not to turn against everything that it is
meant to defend and encourage,” the
pope said at Baltimore-Washington
Airport, where he was seen off by
Vice President A1 Gore. “Democracy
stands or falls with the truths and
values which it embodies and pro
motes.”
With the Democratic vice presi
dent who supports abortion rights sit
ting at his elbow, the pope said that
central among these values is “the
sanctity of human life in all conditions
and at all stages of development ...
from conception to natural death.”
The pope and Gore also talked to
each other for about 10 minutes. The
vice president told John Paul that Presi
dent Clinton appreciated his efforts to
bring peace in Bosnia.
Newspaper reports Simpson’s plans to wed
SANTO DOMINGO, Domini
can Republic — O.J. Simpson
headed to the Dominican Repub
lic on Sunday for a speedy mar
riage to model Paula Barbieri, a
local newspaper reported.
In a front-page report, the Listin
Diario newspaper quoted unidentified
sources as saying Simpson and Ms.
Barbieri left Los Angeles on Saturday
for Miami and were to fly on a private
plane to the Dominican Republic on
Sunday.
There was no confirmation of the
report. Dominican immigration offi
cials would not say whether Simpson
had arrived or planned to arrive. Sev
eral Dominican airports and the U.S.
Embassy also said they had no infor
mation about the reports.
Attorney Johnnie L. Cochran de
nied Simpson was on his way to the
Dominican Republic, telling CBS
Radio, “No, there’s no truth to that at
all.” Cochran did not return repeated
telephone messages left by The Asso
ciated Press on Sunday.
Listin Diario is the newspaper that
broke the news of Michael Jackson’s
marriage to Lisa Marie Presley in the
Dominican Republic last year.
The Simpson marriage rumors
started surfacing in the Italian media
Friday, three days after a jury in Los
Angeles acquitted Simpson in the
murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown
Simpson, and her friend Ronald
Goldman on June 12, 1994.
