Magical show opens
tonight at Wesleyan
By Gerry Beltz
Senior Reporter ~
Nebraska Wesleyan University
opens its fall theater season with
Henrik Ibsen’s play “The Lady From
The Sea,” directed by Jay Scott
Chipman.
Chipman said he
has had previous
contact with, this
play and thought
it would be a good
piece of work to
do at Wesleyan.
“This was a play
that I had studied
when I was in
_ school and I found|
it very attractive.
I thought it offered very-challenging
roles for actors, and perhaps the best
reason is that is has a lot of appeal to
the audience on a lot of different
levels.” .
Chipman said “The Lady From
The Sea” had a little of everything—
suspense, drama, romance, humor and
some serious dramatic moments.
In “The Lady From The Sea,” the
stable life of wife and mother Ellida
Wangel is rocked by some troubling
memories, a yearning for the sea and
the return of her one true love.
One challenge that Chipman and
his crew met with during the produc
tion was the fact that the play origi
nally called for four different set
tings, but Chipman said they tried
something different by going with
one symbolic set.
“We light it differently to suggest
different places,” he said. “We had a
lot of fun with that.
“Another fun thing about the set is
there is not one level point on the
whole thing. It’s all at different lev
els, and everybody is walking on
angles the whole time in period cos
tumes.”
Chipman credits a great deal of
the quality of this production to the
cast and crew of Wesleyan students.
“They are very hard workers and
very dedicated,” he said.
Another challenge they have faced,
Chipman said, is the language of the
play, which is set in 1888.
“It is more formal and a little more
poetic than our contemporary lan
guage.
“They have worked very hard and
have been finding ways to make that
language work for them.”
Chipman said he was hoping to
work a little bit of magic with “The
Lady From The Sea.”
“We’re hoping that we can draw
the audience into the spell of the
sea,” he said.
“The Lady From The Sea” runs
tonight through Sunday at
MacDonald Theatre at 51 st and Hun
tington streets. The show is at 8 p.m.
tonight through Saturday and at 2
p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $5 each.
Student fair
to emphasize
responsibility
From Staff Reports
“Party smart, think it
through!” is the motto of the
Smart Party Idea Fair, to be
held today in the Centennial
Room. Afterwards, swing over
to the Crib to watch “Friends,”
“The Single Guy,” and
“Seinfeld,” then stick around
for Cribstock, a talent show of
11 acts. N
“The Smart Party Idea Fair
allows students to view differ
ent ideas of partying that take
responsibility into consider
ation,” said Rick DeBellis, a
graduate student assistant to V:
Student Affairs.
The fair will be from 4 p.m.
to 7 p.m., and door prizes will
be given away. The Social Re
sponsibility Committee is spon
soring the event.
“We’re not saying don’t
drink, but party responsibly,”
DeBellis said.
After the three TV shows,
there will be a half-hour break
to set up for Cribstock.
Cribstock, a UNL talent
show, will feature musicians,
magicians, comedians" and
more. The first-place winner
