Huskers win Arby’s Classic

Fridays and Saturdays arc begin
ning to seem like the easiest workouts
of the week for the Nebraska volley
ball team.
Since an August loss to defending
national champion Stanford, the top
ranked Comhuskers had not been chal
lenged heading into this weekend’s
Arby’s Classic, having ripped through
seven straight opponents.
Make it nine straight.
Nebraska easily swept Baylor on
Friday and George Washington on
Saturday, capturing its fourth tourna
ment title in as many weeks.
Against GW, a team that pushed
the Huskers in the second round of the
NCAA Tournament a year ago, Ne
braska dominated, winning 15-5, 15
7,15-1 before a season-high crowd of
4,256 fans at the NU Coliseum.
“I thought we played pretty well,”
said senior middle blocker Allison
Weston, the tournament’s most valu
able player. “We stayed organized.
Defensively, we pursued more balls
than we normally do. We were all
pretty focused on what we needed to
do.”
The 10-1 Huskers kept the
Colonials off balance early, jumping
to a quick 6-0 lead in the first game
and forcing 6-loot-4 Russia-native
Svetlana Vtyurina out of her game.
Vtyurina — who has dominated op
ponents this season with match totals
of 56 kills and 46 kills — had just 13
kills and hit .073 on Saturday.
The Colonials, 10-4, got as close as
9-4 in game one, but Nebraska scored
six of the final seven points to win.
Eight service errors plagued the
Huskers in the second game, but Ne
braska managed to capitalize on Co
lonial mistakes, erasing a 3-0 deficit
to lake a 10-4 lead. GW cut the score
to 13-7 before a Weston kill and a
Maria Hedbeck service ace ended the

game.
“Serving is such an easy skill, but
it’s all mental,” Weston said. “So if
you arc not in it, you are going to miss
a serve.”
Senior Billie Winsett, who, along
with Weston and sophomore Lisa
Reitsma, was named to the all-tourna
ment team, corrected Nebraska’s ser
vice problems in the third game. With
Winsett serving, the Huskers rattled
off 10 straight points.
The Colonials scored once on an
errant hit by Husker outside hitter
Kate Cmich, but Nebraska sided out
and freshman Jaime Krondak served
out the match, finishing GW with an
ace.
Against Baylor, Nebraska played
without senior setter Christy Johnson.
Johnson, who played Saturday, was
held out for the first time in 41 matches
because of a twisted ankle.
Freshman Fiona Nepo Filled in and
led the Huskers to a 15-3,15-6, 15-7
win over the Bears.
Cross country team prepares for Invite

The Nebraska cross country team
held out its top runners Saturday at
the Doanc Invitational.
But the bright spot for the
Comhuskcrs was Melissa Wilson,
who finished sixth overall. Wilson
earned a spot on the travel team for
next Saturday’s Minnesota Invita
tional in Minneapolis.
Even though Wilson will travel
to Minnesota, Coach Jay Dirkscn
said he was happy with all the run
ners’ efforts. He said it was a really
good meet for the people who went.
“Our first real test will come at
the Minnesota Invite,” Dirksen said.
“We’ve been practicing hard all
week.”
Dirksen said that he was disap
pointed by the loss of Banti Itcffa.
ItefTa will miss the rest of the sea
son with a broken foot.

Husker soccer team
savors weekend wins

The Nebraska soccer team
needed to win its two games this
weekend.
And that ’s what the Comhuskers
did by defeating Kansas 7-1 Friday
night and Wyoming 8-0 Sunday at
the Abbott Soccer Park Complex.
Husker coach John Walker, who
saw his team improve to 3-4, said
the two wins were important for his
team’s confidence.
“Lots of times if you have a
pretty good team that loses a couple
of games, then they start to lose a
little confidence and self-esteem,”
Walker said. “A pretty good team
then becomes an average team. We
wanted to make sure we avoided
that pitfall.”
Freshman midfielder Dawn
Riesberg scored her first goal as a
Husker against Wyoming. Her goal
gave Nebraska an 8-0 lead over
Wyoming, setting a record for the
largest margin of victory.
Riesberg said the Huskers were
becoming more accustomed to play
ing together. She said the win was a
definite confidence booster for the
Huskers.

“My body’s been hurt, they’ve
tried to damage my character and
my family has gone through a very
tough time. That pretty much cov
ers everything that could go wrong.
“I’ve caught some bad breaks,
but that’s part of life. I know every
thing can’t go my way. All I can
hope is to learn from this and be a
better person. I know things like
that happen. It goes with the terri
tory.”
Hopefully for Benning, a little
good fortune may be part of the
territory also.
