J 466-6066 ( I Fine performances fill shelves By Gerry Beltz It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the new release shelves. In fact, it’s been so busy that not all of the releases could be listed here, but we’ll try to touch on the big titles. As usual, the pick-of-the-week can always be counted on for good taste. “Major Payne” (PG-13) — Damon Way an s again “graces” us with his presence, again as a misfit on a mission. In “Major Payne,” Wayans por trays a cartoonishly gung-ho military sergeant with a gold tooth in his mouth and good intentions in his heart. Naturally, instead of battle, he’s assigned to a platoon of misfits to whip into shape. Think “Heartbreak Ridge” as a comedy, but undeserving of a laugh track. Avoid this movie at all costs. “Pulp Fiction” (R) — Let’s put this up front: If you can laugh at the dark side of reality, you’ll love “Pulp Fiction.” Director Quentin Tarantino fol lowed up his intense 1992 hit “Reser voir Dogs” with this dark comedy drama, a story about three stories (as he reportedly had it written on die cover of the screenplay). An incredible all-star cast doesn’t hurt the film either, including Tarantino regulars Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi and Harvey Keitel. Also starring are John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson, all of whom were nominated for Acad emy Awards for their performances in this fine production. “Pulp Fiction” was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, includ ing Best Picture, but walked away with only one award: Best Original Screen play by Tarantino and Roger Avary. Another warning: The film is very graphic with language and many situ ations. (The f-word is used a mini mum of 278 times, by my last count.) The film is incredible. It is price less. Go find it and rent it now. “Little Odessa” (R) — Tim Roth only had a small role in “Pulp Fic tion,” but he heads up the cast in this marvelous drama, set at Brighton Beach. Roth plays a hitman who has man aged to shut himself off from every thing around him, including his own soul. When he visits his family, how ever, his 1 ife begins to crumble around him. Stellar performances from Roth and supporting cast members — in cluding Moira Kelly, Vanessa Redgrave and Edward Furlong — make “Little Odessa” a good film to find. “Losing Isaiah” (R) — What makes a good mother? This is the decision that must be made in “Losing Isaiah,” when an African-American baby is seemingly abandoned by his drug-using mother (Halle Berry), then adopted by a very white-bread couple (David Straithaim and Jessica Lange). Mom finds out and decides she wants her child back. Again, magnificent performances abound, including Berry, Lange, and Laurence Fishbume as a lawyer who believes “black babies belong with black mothers.” PICK-OF-THE-WEEK — Granted, “Pulp Fiction” can be a real mind-bender, but if you’re looking for a movie that’s REALLY on the brink between reality and madness, try “Altered States.” This was the breakthrough film for William Hurt, starring as Dr. Jessup, a brilliant doctor who begins experimenting with a sensory-depri vation tank, searching the inner brain for the secrets of life. The film is brilliantly acted and executed, and the visual effects are nothing less than phenomenal. It is a must-see.
