But someone with his reputation would
have an effect.”
A Lincoln Police Department
anonymous source echoed the county
attorney’s statements.
“Most of the police department
considers the athletic department a
pain in the neck,” the police source
told Sports Illustrated. “...The athletic
department feels we persecute their
players. To a certain extent they may
be right because there is the feeling
they create problems for us rather than
solve them.
“The athletic department thinks
they are cooperating with police when
they have the athlete turn himself in.
But they’ve already talked to him, and
by the time we’re able to interview the
kid, he’s not talking, not saying any
thing.”
The story details other Huskers who
have been arrested:
• Riley Washington, who awaits
trial on an attempted second-degree
murder charge.
• Tyrone Williams, who was
charged with two felony counts in
connection with a January 1994 shoot
ing. He has not yet been tried.
• Reggie Baul, who pleaded guilty
to one count of receiving stolen prop
erty, was fined $ 100 and placed on six
months probation.
• Christian Peter, who was sen
tenced to 18 months probation in May
1994 after he pleaded no contest to a
third-degree sexual assault charge
brought by Natalie Kuijvenhoven.
Kuijvenhoven, a former Miss Ne
braska and 1994 UNL graduate, told
Sports Illustrated that Osborne re
quested she come into his office so she
and Peter “could settle their differ
ences.”
“It’s clear that Osborne was trying
to intimidate me in order to get rid of
me before a trial would ever happen,”
she told the magazine.
Osborne is quoted heavily in the
story defending his national champi
onship program.
“A lot of these fellows don’t have
families you can point to. Lawrence s
‘7don't tell Tom
Osborne how to run the
football department,
and he should stay out
of the criminal justice
system."
GARY LACEY
Lancaster County Attorney, to
Sports Illustrated
has a mother and father but has very
little contact with them. It’s the same
with Tyrone Williams. People say we
should get rid of them,” Osborne said
in the magazine story. “I say you work
with them. ...If Lawrence is in a struc
tured program, he’s more apt to get
treatment than if we cut him loose.”
Joe Nigro, a Lancaster County pub
lic defender, said Osborne would be
lieve anything his players say.
“Osborne and his Christian values
are very, very strong,” Nigro told
Sports Illustrated. “These kids get into
trouble, he cares for them a lot, wants
to take care of them and he tends to
believe anything these kids tell him.
“The problem with Phillips is that
it happened at Scott Frost’s apartment
and Scott talked to him before
Lawrence talked to him. He has to
believe someone.”
The magazine story closes by ask
ing the questions: “What does it say
when missingpractice and misdemean
ors are equally criminal? What does it
say when misdemeanors and felonies
have to be included in the guidelines?”
Few players are quoted in the story.
However, Baul, a split-end, said the
Nebraska program has the same prob
lems that other schools have.
“Just because a few guys have made
a few mistakes doesn’t mean our pro
gram isn’t clean,” Baul told Sports
Illustrated. “It’s not like we’re to the
point where we have killers and con
victs in the huddle.”
