Award-winning research benefits swine By Sarah Danberg Staff Reporter Pseudorabies sounds like it belongs in a horror movie, not in a barnyard. But it’s a potentially fatal disease that attacks swine. Luis Schang, a vet erinary and biomedical sciences gradu ate student, has won a national award for his research on the disease. He was awarded the Joseph J. Garbarino Award, a national award from the Animal Health Institute Foun dation. The pseudorabies virus causes an acute infection that swine retain for life. The virus has periods of dor mancy, but sometimes reactivates and spreads to other animals. Schang found that by using vac cines he could prevent or minimize the virus and prevent death in herds. This discovery is especially important in areas such as Nebraska and Iowa, he said, where farming is a big part of the economy. “There are many things we do not understand that we should about this virus,” Schang said. He said the virus affected the cen tral nervous system, resulting in respi ratory, nervous and reproductive dis orders. Schang became interested in the virus in his rural hometown in Argen tina, 15 years ago. I 17th & N Street No Appointments Necessary 476-9466^(5^ $6 Off®? Massage Continued from Page 1 Gilbertson and her techniques are popular with dancers and athletes, Marvin said. “She’s a real professional with a good sense of humor,” Marvin said. “She makes you feel comfortable, and it’s worth the money.” Gilbertson charges $25 for a half hour session and $40 for an hour. She gives students a special price of $30 per hour. After initial visits to identify prob lems in the body and align muscles and internal structures, most people like to come in once or twice a month to relax and loosen muscles, Gilbertson said. But relaxing is tougher than it sounds, she said. Gilbertson said she relaxed her patients by starting with a Swedish massage. “Each person is treated differently depending on what my hands sense about them,” Gilbertson said. And her hands sense a lot, she said. Gilbertson stumbled into the massage profession. She had been going to a chiropractor after a horse sat on her, she said. When she suggested differ ent ways the chiropractor could help her, he remarked that she was very in tune with her body, she said. So Gilbertson decided to put that talent to use and enrolled in the Omaha School of Massage Therapy. She opened her own practice once she graduated. “Massage is preventative medi cine,” Gilbertson said. “It makes muscles elastic to prevent injury, gets rid of toxins and also makes you relax, which makes a difference in the im mune system.” Crime Continued from Page 1 Casady said. Most crimes are commit ted by young adults between the ages of 15 and 30, Casady said. That age group has been rising in the city, he said, and will continue to rise. LPD has responded to the rise in violent crimes by expandingits police force by 22 positions in two years, Casady said. The department now has 175 officers patrolling the street, patrolling the streets. Casady said Lincoln residents could help prevent violent crime by keeping their neighborhoods strong. Residents should become active in Neighbor hood Watch Associations, he said. “I believe if we get our neighbor hoods involved, we can avoid many problems other communities have had,” Casady said.
