Weekend •> - • Huskers win Wyoming invite From Staff Reports__■ Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pettit won his 600th career match Friday. The Cornhuskers aI"so defeated their third-ranked opponent this year, cn route to winning another tournament. On Friday, Pettit’s team crushed Gonzaga 15-2,15-1,15-4, in just 50 minutes to give him his 600th career win. Gonzaga wasn’t much of a test for the Huskers, assistant coach Cathy Noth said. Then, on Saturday, the No. 1 Huskers defeated 24th-ranked Georgia 15 8,15-9,15-7 in the seventh three-game sweep for Pettit’s team this year. And the Huskers swept host Wyoming 15-3,15-3,15-8. Allison Weston led the Huskers with 18 kills and six blocks in the game. She also won tournament MVP honors. “Allison is probably the best offensive player in the country. She is so versatile,” Pettit said. Soccer team drops two games From Staff Reports_ The Nebraska soccer team fell to 1 -4 this weekend, losing to Portland 3 0 on Saturday and Washington 5-1 on Sunday at the Portland Adidas Invitational in Portland, Ore. Portland, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals a year ago, is ranked third in the nation. The Pilots jumped on the Cornhuskers early, scoring their first goal at 19:21 of the first half. Portland, 5-0-1, scored again later in the first half, and iced the win with another goal early in the second half. Washington, 2-4, scored three first-half goals and took a 5-0 lead before a Husky .defender knocked the ball into her owh net, scoring Nebraska’s lone goal of the tournament. Nebraska plays its first-ever Big Eight game Friday against Kansas at the Abbott Soccer Park Complex in Lincoln. Huskers take title at Pioneers From Staff Reports _. _ The Nebraska cross country team competed in its first and only home meet of the season Saturday in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park. The Nebraska women took the overall team title, scoring 34 points. Husker sophomore Nora Shepherd led the Huskers by finishing fifth with a time of 18:35.3. Freshman Heather McMahon placed sixth at 18:41,9; Lindsey Miller placed eighth with a time of 18:43.0; and Gina Ivory placed ninth at 18:45.2. Juniors Sandi Fein, Sherri El wood and Christina Blackmer finished 11th, 12th, and 13th, respectively. The men’s team was paced by senior runner Brady Bonsall, who placed fifth in the 8000-meter run with a time of 24 minutes, 30.4 seconds. Sophomore Jim Vance placed 14th, coming in at 27:00.9; junior David Olson was 18th at 27:13.0; and sophomore Alex Lamme placed 19th with a time of 27:21.6. The men finished second overall with 80 points. Barton County won the meet with 63 points. • Softball team loses In championship From Staff Reports _ The Nebraska softball team had many opportunities to beat Colorado State, but many times the Cornhuskers failed in the championship game of the Husker Fall Classic. The Huskers lost to the Rams 4-2 in eight innings Sunday at the NU Softball Complex. * Nebraska rallied from one-run deficits twice to tie the game and in the bottom of the sixth had a great chance to take the lead, but Tobin Echo • Hawk flew out to deep center, ending the rally. gb In the top of the eighth inning, Colorado State’s Sarah Fredstrom was placed on second because of the international tie-breaking rule-that takes place in extra innings and would eventually steal third. Fredstrom eventu ally scored on a double to left by Amy ReCouper.
