UNMC’s Eppley Institute for Re search in Cancer & Allied Diseases is offering a free mini-medical school on cancer. The school will offer this free six week program to the public starting next week. Students will listen to and talk with cancer specialists about cell structure, cancer prevention and di agnosis. Jennifer Cook, a UNMC spokes woman, said the program would give the public a chance to learn vital information. “There will be a broad spectrum of presentations for people to learn almost everything they ever wanted to know about cancer,” Cook said. “There will be a time for questions and answers at the end of each class and materials to take with you.” The series will be held at the UNMC College of Nursing in Cooper Auditorium. It will run Sept. 20 to Oct. 25 on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Diplomas will be presented on graduation night. Seating is limited and registration is encouraged but not required. The'gdfes will be dedicated Sept. 23. Festival spirit strengthens unity By Doug Kems Staff Reporter It’s a celebration of culture and spirit. The Hispanic Heritage Festival begins Saturday at 10 a.m. in Agri cultural Hall on the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. “It’s a showcase for everyone to come and see the Latino sounds. Latino sights, and Latino colors,” said Eliot Rivas, festival chairper son, “and to experience it in a family i, oriented atmosphere.” Ethnic foods served at the festival would vary from Mexican to Chil ean, Phillipino and El Salvadoran cuisines, he said. Scheduled events Saturday in clude: — A presentation of the Hispanic Community Center by Nebraska Lt. Gov. Kim Robak, State Sen. Kate Witek and Lincoln Mayor Mike Johanns, among others, at noon. — Dancing by the Capital City Cloggers at 3:15 p.m. — A jalapeno pepper-eating con test at 4:55 p.m. — A performance by the band Mariachi Zapata de Omaha at 6 p.m. — A dance at 9 p.m. featuring two bands with Latino flavor: Mambo X, a Kansas City salsa/merengue act and Futuro, a tex-mex/ranchera band. The bands will alternate half-hour sets for four hours. The festival is sponsored by the Hispanic Community Center.
