Kicking back ^ _ Jon Waller/DN Rich Gilbert, left, and Bill Middleton enjoy Tuesday’s pleasant weather by playing hacky sack. The commission acts as a liaison between the campus community and the chancellor. Claudia Price-Decker, former chairperson, said the commission tried to bring changes to benefit women. Recent issues include equalizing faculty salaries and developing a new sexual harassment policy. Women’s issues also have been made an academic study through the . Women’s Siudies program. > Barbara DiBemard, director, said the program taught students about the historical and contemporary contri butions to and by women in society. “We look at the assumptions about women in all academic disciplines,” she said. “We evaluate those assump tions and decide if they need to be changed.” About 30 people chose to major in Women’s Studies, a program within the College of Arts and Sciences, she said; however, most of the people who take the courses are not Women’s Studies majors. The courses fill minority require ments for other majors, she said, and have been accepted as part of the new integrated studies and comprehensive education program. There are also several women’s groups represented outside the Women’s Studies program, includ ing: 9 Women in Communication (Col lege of Journalism and Mass Commu nications). • Undergraduate Women in Busi ness (College of Business Adminis tration). • Women Investigating Science and Environments (started by a grant from the National Science Founda tion operating within the university). • Graduate-Women in Science (College of Arts and Sciences). ' • Letras Femeninas (Department of Modem Languages and Literature). • Society for Women in Engineer ing (College of Engineering). The Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women wants to pull all the influential women on campus and in the community together for a Dec. 7 conference in the Nebraska Union called.“Breaking the Glass Ceiling.” Speakers will include the Rev. Jane Henan, Nebraska’s only female Epis copal rector; Cecilia Huerta, director of the Mexican-American Associa tion; Lincoln Police Lt. Kim Koluch; Joan Leitzel, interim chancellor and Lt. Gov. Kim Robak. ► — mmm 1 Do You Belong to WC's EA.C. Club? Valentino's Pizza every Wednesday (from 9-11 pm) and Friday (4:30-7:30pm) F.A.C. Ideally, the Broyhills would like to see another fountain constructed iden tical to the current one, he said. But they realize that’s an unlikely sce nario. Craig Broyhill said the family is encouraged by the recent increase in communication with the university. “They keep saying they want to include us in everything,” he said. “I hope they follow through with that.” . Griesen said the university would not “leave the Broyhills out in the cold.” There is also concern about how the new construction will affect stu dents, he said. Since the Union and the fountain tend to act as a hub for stu dent life, he said, the expansion must be carefully planned. < Home off the A Mix-in!
